You’re basically right, but thinking of it backwards. The law is supposed to control the employer, not the employee.
If you employ students, and they work more than 20hrs/wk, you must pay them min wage, if they’re under 20hrs/wk, you can pay them 85% of min wage.

If you make minimum wage and are out of school, either you are trying to be a fuckup or you need to go back to school. Minimum wage shouldn’t be enough to buy a $150k house and a new suv every two years, it should be so high school kids can make a little money and learn how to be productive in a work environment so that when they get out of school, they can make something out of themselves.
