Motor Oil Opinion...

The last oil change I did I used Excellium 5W40 and it seemed to be ok. It was the first oil change to synthetic after 100k. I have not experienced any leaks with this oil however I need to change it and I was thinking about something a little different.

I was reading up on the Royal Purple Synthetics and they seem to be hyped up a lot. I was thinking 10W40, 5W40 for the weight. They seem to have another additive in there called “synerlec” (some sort of Moly derivative) that is supposed to reduce friction.

From various users they said they experienced louder valvetrain noise with this oil. Some of them noted that oil consumption increased a little as well.

I’m just curious if anybody has tried out this oil? Did the valvetrain become louder, any other issues?

I’ve never used that specific oil personally, but I have usually gone with the heavier oil in my CA without problems. I run Mobil 1 5w50 synthetic, even with 130xxx km on the engine consumption has never been an issue, a little blowby but nothing terribly bad.

I ran royal purple 5w30 synthetic on my gtir
did the same as I did on my 180.

I didnt try any other oil so I dont know if it was louder, I know my gtir in general ticks loud. But I never had any leaks or problems with the oil. whenever i did a oil change it was always real clean.

During summer i go with heavy oil’s like 20w50 for my ka, damn hydrolick lifter get loud on hot days with thin stuff. Spring/fall just regular oil grade do just fine, and 4 winter it s stored.

I just went and got some regular old Castrol GTX… the Elf Synthetic turned dark brown after about 4500km and it smelled like gasoline a bit.

I think I may have slightly overfilled it last time (you are supposed to use 4L but I put in about 4.5L to get the dipstick level up to the full notch). Still even with that extra oil it should have been ok.

The reason I was considering the RP is cause of the Synerlec which seems like it would make the cylinders seal better.

If your smelling gas you might wanna check your compression first, then decide if you need a rebuild and then what oil to use. Oils with sealers are a band-aid at best and band-aid don’t fix shit unless your a 4 yr old kid.

I’ve run Mobil 5w30 all year round (start at 80k km, now 126k km) and only noticed I had a slight increase in noise from my valve train but thats because the Mobil tends to be very runny even at colder temperatures.

I used Mobil 1 5w30 in the winter, and 10w30 for the summer in my old KA (R.I.P.) and never had any problems with noise or oil consumption.

I’ve been considering Royal Purple for a while as well, keep hearing nothing but good things about it. I’ll most likely use it for the 1jz . . .

When I had the car just before winter came I put in some 10W30 mineral. 3500km later the oil was brown but it smelled fine. In the spring I put in some ELF Excellium 5W40. I think I overfilled it a bit (like 4.5L or so)… would that be a HUGE issue? On top of that I am running an atmospheric vent to the air which would cause the cylinders to become richer at various intervals. I suppose it may have been dirty just due to the fact that the oil cleaned out a lot of the deposits around the motor since it was the first synthetic change. The car pulls very hard as is and doesn’t smoke/consume any oil at all.

I drained the synthetic stuff today and it was very brown. I just popped this Castrol GTX back in and the valve train seems to run a little quieter. I figure this one will just have to be changed a little sooner than the synthetic (like 3000-3500km).

I would do a compression test but I don’t see a point because if I need a rebuild it won’t happen any time soon. Besides, in late September I’m leaving to go live in Japan for the next couple years so a rebuild is the last thing on my mind.

i run 5w30 royal purple. I cant say enough good things about royal purple. Redline is my second favorite either pass my test.
