MPD47's On-Going Drifting Thread: Stories, Pics & Vids

cool very nice!!

did you actually experience any driving improvments with this style splitter?

On my Porsche yes. On the 350z I would have, except it had been damaged so much that by the time I got to the glen where I would have seen aero gains it self destructed. I’m adding some more supports off the frame rails to try and keep this from happening again. It’s a learning process for sure. This combined with a wing gasp should allow me to pick up a decent bit of time at some larger tracks.

I can say for sure without the front bumper/aero on the Z it had a noticeable amount of mid corner understeer at the Glen.

how much was a sheet of that aluminum?

looks awesome btw

$100~

Moxies has been out of business for like the last 2 years.

Came inside for lunch, so here’s a new photo. Car has “old” control arms (non350z parts) which fucked with the caster too much and pushed the wheels forward. Going to make a new set this week probably that put things into spec and allow for more angle.

DOPE !!!

needs MOAR giant wing and side skirts lol

Yes, yes it does. Working on that.

Over the weekend Matt, Mike @ Inn and I worked on engine/trans fitment. Unfortunately I have to ditch the power steering in it’s current setup. It is definitely possible to keep but for now I’m going to delete it to try and keep things simple. I may need to goto a manual brake setup and delete the booster as well. We’ll see. Playing with some steering stuff right now which alters engine fitment due to oil pan clearance etc. Couple photos from a few days back. Just got home and I’m about to head out and work on it again.

So I worked on engine fitment some more today. I really was dreading the idea of having to engineer a new brake system. So much so that I was debating just buying a tilton pedal box and rocking out. Yeah waste more money, that’s the ticket roll eyes. Thankfully after fully deleting the PS system it looks like the motor and gearbox will fit in conjunction with the current brake system. Which is a huge plus in my book.

All these PS lines are now gone, I can add PS back in if I route them differently but for now I’m just going to pack the rack with grease and rock out. I did this on my 944 and it worked fine… granted it went lock to lock so much less frequently.

Sway bar is a bit to close to the oil filter so I’m going to have to remote mount it, which also isn’t a big deal as I was going to put an adapter block on for my oil cooler setup anyway.

Looking down the driver’s side of the motor. I don’t have the time or want to go custom headers right now so I’m going to stick to some tubular shorties rather than full long tubes. No quite so cool, but should deal with my space constraints for now. Plus way easier to put twins on later

I’m still working on exactly how much of the bell housing to machine away. Spent some time chalking the input shaft and installing the trans on the VK to figure out exactly where it is sitting right now. Tomorrow I’ll play with clutch fitment and the spare VQ35 sitting in my garage to figure out the exact measurement. Should HOPEFULLY get the bell housing machined this week for final fitment.

Just about exactly where the motor is going to sit. It’s more of a front/mid setup now than it used to be, it’s also very low (going to need a hefty skid plate). The VQ used to sit higher, and further forward (timing covers on the VK are further back than the front two cylinders on the VQ used to be).

Car goes to paint next Monday so I’m HOPING we can get the motor mounts built before then, but it kinda all hinges on the bell housing for now.

looking good so far Mike!

Looking good. to progress.

If you decide to go manual brakes, I have a wilwood brake and clutch setup (two separate pedal boxes) at the house. Pedal box, two masters, balance bar etc. Id only need like $150 for the brake setup alone. Just a thought.

Dan

that is definitely sitting quite a bit behind where the VQ sits. Nice job man.

I’d hit dat ass…

car looks good. If you’re working on it this weekend I should be able to stop by if you want a hand. Maybe I’ll get a concussion this time…

Bwuahaha, No subframes to install right now. But I certainly owe you a concussion from that damn DSM.

DAT ASS!

So I was jealous that newman messed up his shoulder and had a good excuse for why his car wasn’t 100% done. So I went out and did what my doctors are referring to as a “Grade 2 Shoulder Separation” which means I’m out of commission for 6-8 weeks with 3 months or so till I’m mostly recovered. Ooooops. Gonna be calling in some favors to get the car done. They told me I can still drive it, but it’s GOING to hurt.

that really sucks

feel better soon man

Shoulder is still totally fucked, so I’m sure it would have been hilarious to watch me pull the bell housing off the trans one handed. On the bright side I have some mobility back with my right arm so I can once again drink with my right hand. This lead to my using a foot to push down the rear of the trans, yanking the bell housing off with my left hand, and drinking a beer with my right. All that is man?

Taking that to get machined tomorrow.

Spent most of the day fitting and refitting bodywork, got the side skirts on, which took a shit ton of work. I had to cut off a section of the old fenders, combine the two together, space out the new ones, yada yada. Basically it took several hours for the first one and like 30 minutes for the second one. heh. But, side skirts are finally fitted to the fenders which means the can can go in to get repainted on Monday (was supposed to go like 2 weeks ago, but blowing out my shoulder and not having proper fender fitment stopped that). Also you can see the new APR GTC 300 wing test fitted in the photo.

Blocks of wood are because I didn’t want to climb under and attach the undertray, and I’ve fixed the headlight to fender gap on the passenger’s side since this was taken.

looks great!

how is the time line looking?
