MPD47's On-Going Drifting Thread: Stories, Pics & Vids

Shit is pretty much all together. Need to mount the exhaust, waiting on the new driveshaft, need to go pick out some new radiator hoses tomorrow that will work. Gauges sync’d up (the ones I can test), throttle sensors all work, clutch sensor, etc. Put the new aluminum radiator and core support in, which changed the hood mounting slightly so I’ll need to extend the hood pins in the front tomorrow. It actually makes the hood fit better (no weird gap at the back) so that’ll work out nicely as well.

Sadly I won’t be making DMCC or ClubLoose’s ECB this weekend. So I’ll just relax and hang out drinking many beers.

I take it you have not fired it up?

I’d like to see the final fitment of the hood

I’ve tried, but I have a software issue in the ECM right now we’re trying to solve. It’s stuck in Nissan’s infamous “Lock mode” which leads to the aptly named “Escape from Lock Mode!” function.

I’ll have photos of it with the bodywork on later today.

Edit:
Fucking NYSpeed doubling my posts.

Basically just been finishing up all the little stuff towards the final stages of a project like this. Looking for leaks, making final hose connections, refitting bodywork, yada yada.

I had to completely refit the hood after putting the radiator core support in, and make new headlight brackets to keep them from drooping when the bumper was missing. I had originally planned on making a metal core support that the radiator sat in like most lower core supports, but the ease of the factory plastic unit won me over for now. Maybe in the off season I’ll do some tube frame front end stuff. Panel gap between the fender, headlight and hood are pretty good all things considered (track car, wrong bodywork).

Just some more progress putting things together, I still HATE the plastic clips that hold the bumper on next to the headlights, I don’t think the panel gaps there will ever stay perfect when the car is on track so I modified the clips so I can thread zipties through them so atleast I shouldn’t run over the bumper if I tap something and it tries to come off.

I need to fix the software issue, install the driveshaft, finish the radiator hoses, install the oil cooler and remote filter setup, extend the MAF wires (as I moved the intake tube’s location to the driver’s side of the car), install the ebrake brembos (and make a new hardline for them), install the exhaust, and get the car tuned and dialed in for a test or two before DMCC Round 2 June 19th/20th.

I’m gonna cringe if you smash that front end up…

You and me both, the bumper and fenders are cheap as shit, but the headlights are NOT!

Cooling system is all together and checked for leaks, found a single leak on the fuel system which was easy to fix up, should have all the steering reconnected tomorrow if everything goes to plan (had a bit of a clearance issue with the U-joint to header, it’s extremely tight). Clutch feels great, but will have to triple check engagement once the engine is running. Redid the intake tube, cut new wires for the MAF sensor as it’s now located on the opposite side of the car as to where I originally intended it to go. I also talked to Driveshaftshop today who were in the process of working on my driveshaft, aparently there was a hold up getting some parts machined for it. They sounded optimistic that it would ship out this week, but we’ll have to see. Another thing my VK was lacking when I purchased it was the oil filler tube, which hilariously is not available separately… and I was not going to pay for an entire new valve cover so I put together a plate today to cover the oil filler hole with a piece of rubber for a gasket. Now if I could just figure out where I left my overflow tank for my cooling system… hahaha.

As long as I finish up the steering tomorrow I’ll drop the car down and roll it outside and hopefully get the lock mode/software issue taken care of one way or another. I have 3 solutions, none involve a BFH or fire surprisingly.

Coming along… only 17 days till DMCC round 2.

Can’t wait for this fucker to fire up!

Wow, it actually came together pretty nicely in the end!

I am considering doing a pin-on hood and trunk as well. Even though Lana has the tubed front with no hood latch, I still have the hinges, and the trunk still have the latch, hinges, and everything. I bet I can save a lot of weight there! Thanks for the inspiration

–mark

wow, starting to really shine!

looks great. GL getting the computer issue handled.

Updates? Any luck on getting this thing started yet? 9 days…

Dan

Lots of problems with about a dozen parts. Had to ship a bunch of stuff out overnight to get things fixed. Dunno.

Fuck, that sucks :-\

I feel you’re pain. Howwever, I dont really have a deadline…

Dan

Updates?

Dan

Yeah, I unfortunately missed DMCC Round 2, and a couple of Clubloose days. Stuff just didn’t go together as planned, and at one point I sent back a part that was perfectly fine because in my delirium of a laundry list of parts that showed up broken, or wrong (or not at all) I assumed my driveshaft was too short and was just being stupid. Whoops!

Unfortunately I’m still locked out of my ECM, so the car has to goto Dorschel Nissan, probably Monday, to get unlocked. Amusingly the software I have to disable the security system only works if the security system hasn’t locked itself. :picard:

Been putting stuff together as parts show up, I’ve been low on patience and time as of late but put some solid hours in on the car the past few days.

Did my filter relocation and oil cooler setup. Mocal core, and a bunch of other parts from Mike @ Innovative Tuning. I absolutely loath putting together AN- lines. Need to go buy a couple filters for it, and one for the old Nissan mount on the motor (so if I take a hit in the front and destroy the oil system I can slap a Nissan filter on and not be totally screwed for a weekend).

Hydraulic ebrake stuff is done, bled, and operational.

Driveshaft, axles, sway bars, exhaust are all installed. You can see the gap between the Y pipe and the headers for the VK which will have to be finished with some spare flanges and 45° degree pipes. Spent a ton of time going through suspension parts, checking torque, bleeding brakes, resealing a leaky oil pan, etc. Need to put fluids in the trans and diff. Should hopefully be running by this coming weekend… (I know I’ve said that before).

Short list is: Finish exhaust, fit underside V-brace/oil pan protection, install electrical master cutoff, install fire suppression system, ConsultII Lock Mode initialization, tuning, 2nd fluid change, add 6 bars to cage, burnouts!

Looking good man, and I agree with Josh I will cringe if you smash it up haha Hope the ECM issue gets solved soon!

Awesome. Sooooo close.

Dan

Yeah, I’m hoping I don’t curse myself… but minus a spring rate change, sway bar adjustment, or tweak to the alignment, I’m HOPING it’s ready to rock straight out of the box. Obviously I have more things I’d LIKE to do, but I’m going to save them for this coming winter. Already have another list started.

burn outs is tooooooooooooooooo far down on the list.

Haha, agreed. However I got a large chunk of that list taken care of today. Started working on the fire suppression, added an oil drain to the pan, fixed two oil leaks, pressurized the system, spent hours working on fixing up little shit, yada yada. Basically I got a metric shit ton done, still have to fix a side skirt (you’ll see it in the photos), put a smaller drain plug in (going to a slim keyed one as this hangs down too low), finish fire, e-cutoff, exhaust. I also need to remake a new trans mount. My current one is a combination of flat stock and the original piece, which was done for time… and because I was lazy. Going to have to make a real one out of tube now because the exhaust y-pipe interferes with it and drags on the ground on anything but flat pavement (NOT GOOD!). Anyway, car is in the trailer, mostly together to get the ECM flashed tomorrow. Going to do my best to start it up and heat cycle it tomorrow open header and piss my neighbors off.

Massive oil filter, with the cooler, new lines, shorter pan, my capacity is just over 9qts.

Spent a ton of time getting those bumper gaps down to acceptable levels today, literally spent a couple hours on bumper fitment… probably pointless but I’d like to start out with it looking fresh!

Still need to fix up that pesky side skirt, but coming along!

All packed up and ready to rock! (SOON!)
