Looks like the 408 is going into the Nova. Pistons and cam ordered. I will try it out on the S480 turbo but it is too small for that many cubes.
New motor(I have had it awhile but it has high comp pistons now)
408ci - Callies crank, rods, wiesco -15cc pistons
CNC ported LS3 heads
9.9:1 comp(yeah I like em high)
LJMS/BTR Stage IV cam - 234/239 .600ish 115LSA IIRC
Staying with the cast S480
Looking for an 8.9 but the end all goal will be 8.5 at 160+ and still be a steel bodied full glass car that drives on pump gas. Again I will be pushing a setup to its limits. On this setup it will be the smaller cc heads on 4 bolt gaskets. LSA heads would be a better choice but I have the LS3 topend laying around so I will try it. Look for a blown headgasket or two next year! haha
I was on the phone with Yank earlier about the converter and he insists that it is the trans and not the verter im blowing through. Although much of what he said about turbo setups did not give me confidence at all.
After some conversation with some of the fastest mid/low 8sec guys one blew 3 motors(bent rods) riding the limiter. So I have the limiter at 7,000 and resume at 6,999. I know it doesn’t sound like a big difference but he changed his resume from 7,200 to 6,850 and has not had the same issue. Think the constant load/unload does it. Only theory but will be how I set it up for the future.
At that power level hell it could be natural causes. But I had two very accomplished LS shops say they have experienced this in two days. Also remember I didn’t tag a limiter and shift or let out I just stayed in it…for awhile. I still think its converter. Even though Yank claims its the trans.
In for 25th haha. See if I can get it running again and tuned by then.

Ok so I had a 408(stroked 6.0) that I bought ohhh about a year ago maybe. It was a 11.5 comp NA motor that I thought I would put in my camaro. Well things have changed and I decided to set it up for boost.
Ordered a nice set of coated weisco pistons with an upgraded wrist pin set, new LS9 head gaskets, and a boost cam and got to work.
After the teardown we discovered the rod bearings were OK one had a few marks in it. So I replaced all rod bearings. Didn’t get a ton of pics during but we took a longblock, tore it down to just a crank, and rebuilt it.
So back to the other motor the stock 6.0 that was making noise. Looks like the piston was hitting the crank due to the bent rod. This was likely the noise and id almost think it would have clearanced itself soon enough haha.
I freaking love this. I really want to build an engine for the fastback.
Drew you may be the single most aggressive member with builds here. Your leg’s gotta be getting tired from kicking so much ass lately. :tspry: What’s the news on the '69?
Thanks you! I do like to work fast but man the new job has made it harder to find the time. Anyhow as i have said before without help from some very talented board members no way id move this quick. I had never had anything to do with building a bottom end before a few weeks ago. @Haenszel showed me whats up. @Jnj (think he is banned right now) came through in a pinch with rod bearings and as always @FgnIrish89 is there making shit happen.
69 is doing great. Actually when my Forester was in the shop I daily drove it for a few weeks. Love that thing! I need to get some better pics though. Not entirely sure what I am doing with it long term yet.
Good on you for giving props! The best builds are always collaborations.
I don’t always visit NYSpeed, but when I do, I always scope out this car’s progress. It’s bleedin’ ferocious
