Took care of the ugly front wheel today. Also dropped off the rear backrest pieces for some powdercoat. Can’t wait to get the pieces back and get it all back together.
Also going to be powder coating and installing my passenger peg extenders tomorrow. Almost ready for Indy!!!
Had my rear back-rest powdercoated by a CRC (2 big thumbs up!!!) and got it back on along with the removal of the fake struts (machined a few 6061 aluminum spacers). Also raise the bike back up just a bit because I was scraping frame when turning with my wife on the back. So instead of the 2.25" setting on the PCS, I raised it up to the 1._" setting. (1.75" I think it is). Still looks good but is a little more functional for 2-up riding. Also installed an electronic flasher relay in preparation for my LED front turn signals coming hopefully today. Finally I gave her a full bath because she was pretty dirty from the 20min ride in the rain the other day.
Did a few last quick mods before loading her up to head to Indy Wednesday.
Removed the giant factory front turn signals and replaced them with a couple LED strips wrapped around the forks. I will eventually spend the money on the real fork turn signals, but these will work for now.
Also installed my RAM GPS mount for my Nuvi and the hardwire ‘kit’. We may go to the downtown bike night at indy and the GPS will be quite helpful… lol.
Once that was all finished up, I gave her a quick wipe down and loaded her up in the trailer.
Did lots of work on the Styker after work today. Spent from 4pm until just now out in the garage working my ass off.
Let the fun begin:
List of accomplisments:
Last week I bought and installed an all-in-one 150watt stereo system for the bike that was supposed to have FM radio built in. Well after installing it, it did not have the fm radio. So I contacted the company and they explained that it was a mistake in the description and that they would send me the correct model (even though it was about $50 more). Well a couple days later they emailed me apologizing because that product was out of stock. They told me that I could either get a refund or choose a different product. So I decided to see if they would work on the price for me for the 600watt system (almost $200). They ended up just sending me the 600watt system for no additional charge. So I ended up getting the 600watt system for 1/4 the price! I finally got it the other day and went to work today. It was definitely tough trying to hide the abnormally large amp, but I was able to tuck it away pretty nicely. It shouldn’t have any heat issues, but only time will tell for sure.
Amplifier without tank on:
Amplifier with tank on and bolted down:
With where it is mounted, I just barely have clearance to use the USB and SD Card inputs. The aux. input goes up to my GPS mounted between the speakers and above the cluster.
Speakers / GPS:
When I originally installed my LED’s, a few of the strips were damaged out of the box and had multiple LEDs not working. I emailed the company and they sent me 12 additional strips (originally ordered 12 and only a few were not working) so I decided to go ahead and add some more to the setup. In the end I think there are a total of 19 or 20 LED strips throughout the bike. While I was at it I also changed the power input to constant rather than ignition power so I can turn the lights on without having to have the key on.
Underglow strips along the inside of the frame tubing:
Unfortunately, while removing the tank I had a couple drips of gas get onto my plasti-dipped pieces and the coating just disintegrated so I went through all 4 cylinder covers and peeled off the plasti-dip. I’ll go back through and re-black them out over the winter when I get the other pieces actually painted.
That will probably be it for a while on the bike. I want to get a few things finished and cleaned up on my car before I do any more on the bike. My next mod on the bike will hopefully be a digital guard dog keyless ignition.
I’m not a fan of how they look either, but this definitely function over form. I am a complete audiophile and can’t stand going on a ride (even 15min to work) without music. And I hate having headphones in my ears. When I use my full face or my 3/4 shell I can put headphone speakers inside the helmet, but they tend to make it very tight on my head and uncomfortable. Finally, whenever I wear my 1/2 shell, nothing else works. So as much as I like the look without the speakers, having the music trumps the look (for now at least until I get completely sick of them being there).
I’m sure I’ll eventually get a front cowl which will allow speakers to be mounted without looking completely out of place, but I still prefer the look of the front being more open… even with the speakers. I may look into relocating the speakers later this week to help it look better.
After riding into work I couldn’t stand the speakers. Being on the cluster, they were very flimsy and bounced around a lot and just looked like complete dog crap. So I changed it up a bit. I will lose a little sound mounting them this way, but they are stronger and look a lot better.
Added some Avon heated air cushioned grips. No more cold fingers on those chilly rides to work. Also adds to the look and comfort too which is an added plus.
My uncle is a Yamaha salesman for Penco Powersports out in Kalispell MT & speaks very highly of the star line up. He had a Raider for a while & loved it but ended up getting rid of that for a new Vmax. Bike looks good though, all black is the way to go.
