My car a victim of the Butterfly?

Well I was in Red Deer yesterday and on my way to Red Deer the car started to really hesitate on me on the QE2, so anyhow I just thought “Well, time for another visit to Nissan” Then when I got into Red Deer I was stopped at a Redlight and my car stalls on me! So I start it back up and drive to meet my Buddy, by the time I was leaving in Red Deer the car didn’t seem too too bad so I drove back to Edmonton but on the way back up to the city my car just started running like SHIT the exhaust note sounded like something from a Nightmare and the hesitation of my car felt like… um… let me put it this way nothing I have ever experienced before in my life, and my SES light began flashing so anyhow my car will be going into Nissan tomorrow morning wow I am not happy.

Dude, do you know how to do the SES decode?

The good part is that I was told by a guy at West End Nissan that there is a butterfly valve recall for the 04’s only that had recently been issued. If that’s true, you’ll likely get a new motor.

ouch that sux nick, btu if you can get a new motor that would be killer

Yeah I know the pedal trick, and for all you other spec V owners it is this:

  1. turn car off
  2. turn key over (but don’t engine on)
  3. count to 3 (1 one thousand…etc.)
  4. As soon as you get to 3 thre thousand press the gas pedal down 5 times in less than 5 seconds
5.after pressing the gas pedal down 5 times and have released the pedal count to 7 (1 one thousand…etc)
  5. As soon as you get to 7 seven THOUSAND press the gas pedal down wait ten seconds and the SES light should start flashing.
  6. there is 4 separate light flashes (and ten flashes=a 0 and 4 flashes=a 4) eg. 10 slow flashes then, 3 fast flashes, then 10 fast flashes, then 10 fast flashes= 0300 a multiple cylinder misfire. if the code repeats that is the only code you are throwing but if you are throwing more than one code there will be a pause and either continue to repeat the code or flash a 2nd and 3rd code and continue repeating ALL the codes until you turn the car off
  7. If you want to reset your ECU after you are done counting flashes hold the pedal down for at least ten seconds and then turn the car off and vola no SES light.

P.S. you will know when your car’s ECU has shut off after you hear 2 clicks come from your glove box (where your ECU is), this is helpful if you don’t get the pedal trick to work the first couple of times around, but trust me this works.

Also I had to get my car towed in to Nissan tonight cause the Engine literally sounded like it was going to blow up, which REALLY blows balls and what’s worse is the guy who towed my car in (I was following him to Mills Nissan) scraped my exhaust across the concrete for like 7 feet going into the Mills parking lot and dented and scraped the SHIT outa the bottom of my exhaust, fuck I’m so pissed off. I called Nissan Added security plan about this incompetency and how mad I am about it and I told them I expect to be reimmbursed with a new exhaust, cause if I had known that getting my car towed meant incurring damage I would have risked either driving it or just pushed it all the way down Ellerslie Road to Mills. I’m just so frustrated with all this shit. :ninja: :rambo :guns :reddot: :club: :headz:

And Py, I am getting an MCM code and here is the recall notice:

Well guys I just heard from Mills Nissan and my car was a VICTIM of the Butterfly Valves 5 screws and 2 plates to be exact, I had also put on my old Header and Mid Pipe as per the Warranty instructions and apparently the pre cat had failed on my Spec as well, and I had even had the Heat Shield Recall done when I first got the car, so any of you Spec V owners who have the stock header on your car still if this isn’t a good enough reason for you to get rid of that P.O.S Header I dunno what is. To make a long story short my Spec will be getting a new heart put in this week it just sucks that I need to pay money again to have my Camshafts and Valve Springs and BSR, reinstalled, but Nissan is working out a “Reasonable” price which is good for the both of us. Just thought that I would let you all know what has gone on today.

Yeah so someone buy my header!

Yes, someone buy his header!

Dude, get them to install the springs if you have to, but the cams and bsr we should do ourselves. The cams are fairly easy to do, and then you’d know how to do it.

Ouch though, 2 plates and all those screws. Amazing that it even was still running.

holy shit that sucks, and what a retard tow truck driver.how long are they goign to have your car for?

They will have my car until Tuesday, and yeah I’d love to do the Camshafts and BSR, But I mean they have to take off the head to do the Valve springs, so if they have to do that, they might as well do the camshafts so I don’t really see a point to have them just do the Valve Springs.

You could actually just leave the stockers in place for now, unless you’re planning on raising the rev limit. Realistically they aren’t helping you at all at the moment and it would save you money if we did the cams in the new head without Nissan having to bother.

Why Why Why??? You have the worst luck with your sentra… Sorry to hear that but everytime i go in for my oil changes i most always see your car.

Yo man, sorry to hear about your troubles.

But at least you get a new engine, and you can break it in right now with the right stuff on it. You’re going to get you aftermarket header installed rigth away right? I would… dont’ have them put any stock crap on at all if you dont’ have to.

And like Pyre said, I wouldn’t bother with the valve springs… I know guys who have built the bottom end who haven’t done the valves/springs… if you don’t raise the rev limit you’ll be fine with the stockers for now. Hold on to them so you have them when you do a complete rebuild someday. Then save lots of money buy doing the cams/bsr yourself.

I’m really surprised they’re even giving you the new motor with everyting you’ve had done… even though it’s pretty obvious what caused the problem, some dealerships will straight out refuse any warranty wwork once you’ve gotten inside the engine like that. Be thankful.

Also, ask what they’re doign with your old block. I got a recall block from my old nissan dealer back east for free. It’s great for a build because you’ll sleeve it anyhow. Besides you’d need to get teh head anyhow for your cams and valve springs right? Just ask them for the whole block.

The only real loss here is that you spent so much getting that bish tuned… Good luck with it all man.

Yeah I remember you telling me that you got a block for free back East, I had asked them what they plan on doing with the old engine and they said that they have to do 1 of 2 things with it in order to get re-imbused, either send the Engine back to Nissan or take a sledge Hammer to it and make it un-useable and send pictures of it to Nissan, cause trust me I had already asked them what they had intended on doing with the old engine.

Also I am just going to get Nissan to install the valve Springs, cause I am looking at getting that Technosquare Ecu re-flash done so I will be able to raise that Rev Limiter then.

And yeah It really sucks that I have to now re-tune my car but hey it still works out to be cheaper than having to buy a whole new engine for my car, and I have said lots perhaps not on NECC that Mills Nissan has always been just awesome at “over-looking” my engine mods. The service manager there just loves me for all the shit that I have done to that car. When I called him the other day to see what was going on with my car he was saying that it is pretty obvious that Camshfts or any other mods that I have done were not the cause of this, and it even says in that Warranty recall that an after-market Air Intake is alright. But yes some dealerships can be really anal, but I have always been really impressed with the level of Serivce I have always recieved at Mills.

Good for you man. Lemme know how the Technosquare flash goes for you. It sounds like a goddamn rip off to me, but whatever.

I said that I am going to look into it, so we will see I would not like to be the first one to do it.

Well I don’t know how the dealerships work on this end of the country, but back east, they haev to PAY some scrap yard to come take them away. I know it’s not protocol to just give them to customers, but I know one dealership in Atlantic Canada that has about 10 QR recall blocks sitting there…

Well I will def. ask them again about it when I go in to pick up my car, which should be today I suppose since it is 2am.

Are those full engines/blocks, or just the actual block itself? I’m thinking about getting some port/polish work done this winter or next year and I’d like to have a cylinder head to do it with.
