I’ll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.
The one thing that kinda sucks right now is that she’s still nervous when I start to give commands. So she hesitates to even accept treats when I try to train her. I’m going to try training her outside for a while because once she gets outside, she becomes a totally different dog.
If what I learned from the book is right, then whatever you do don’t coddle her or you’ll reinforce the behavior and it could even turn into fear based aggression, which you do not want in a pit mix. She’ll feel secure and happy and not scared when she accepts you as a strong authoritative figure, as her pack leader.
This is going to get frustrating for a while. I’m sure that I can be consistent with training, the problem lies in my 5 roommates who only want to play with her and be nice to her. Which is ok later, but totally fucks up what I’m doing.
Recall any ideas of trying to get such a timid dog to warm up?
From what I remember, long proper walk, i.e. not stopping to sniff or pee until you tell her to. Then make her do some tricks/train her. Then give her affection, let the roommates play.
Exercise, discipline, affection. In that order. Anything else supposedly just confuses the dog and would make her insecurity worse.
Ugh, next assignment, new food. She farts and it smells SOOOO bad. I took the advice of people at the SPCA for food. Gonna try some stuff my mom uses for her dogs next.
