I was invited to race for hemmings muscle machines last week. It was a street car shootout and we were supposed to use true street cars on street tires. I started out with street tires but then switched to slicks because of poor track conditions. I was the only FWD and only 4 cylinder there. However, there were only a few cars that ran faster than I did.
Here are my time slips and changes for the day;
#1 2.515 sixty foot 13.58 @ 106.39 I had massive tire spin through first and second
#2 2.266 sixty foot 13.168 @109.73 I put the tires down to 14 psi. I launched at 1500 rpms and let it bog for a little, then hit my high boost switch and floored it. I rode the clutch a little in first to try and keep the rpms up but not spin the tires as much.
#3 2.172 sixty foot 13.074@106.13 Same technique as run #2 except I launched at 2000 rpms
#4 2.253 sixty foot 13.322@106.03 Same as #3 but I bogged too hard and my clutch was starting to slip from riding it too hard.
#5 #6 #7 I let my clutch cool off and switched to slicks. I got better traction but my car would not shift into 2nd. I though I was having transmission issues but it ended up being a loose adjustment bolt on the shifter.
#8 2.224 sixty foot 13.050 @110.22 I was still having a lot of wheel spin in first gear but it was nice to be able to get into second gear. I launched at high boost.
#9 1.882 sixty foot 12.736@110.40. I launched at low boost and switched to high boost in 2nd gear. The car ran great except for a slipping clutch in 4th.
The sunday before the event I turned up my boost a little and ran a best of 12.44 @112. That was also when my clutch could not hold the horsepower and torque I was putting down. As of last friday I have a clutch that will hold up for a while.
