Figured I’d start up an ongoing thread mirroring my one on bimmerforums. I’m currently starting to build a new engine and eventually stuff it into a BMW chassis. I picked up an M5 for cheap, missing some parts, half way parted, purely for the engine. The rest is being parted for a profit. Here are some progress pics from the past few days:
Day 1:
Engine and trans, hanging by a thread… err chain.
Trans and oilpan off.
mmmm tasty, though I was really impressed with the stock baffles on the engine.
Day 2:
More wheel restoration work.
Friend’s playing tricks on me
I’ll be updating this, albeit slowly over the course of the engine build. Feel free to ask questions/make suggestions
That’s a tricky question, yes, I fixed the boost leak… but the car is not the same as it used to be. It’s on jackstands because I’m trying to fix the crank trigger on Tec3r, which is acting up for no reason.
They Healey ('66 BJ8) is my father’s. I have a set of keys to it and every year I get it inspected and take care of a few little things on it while he’s on vacation.
Probably gonna finish tearing down the S38 today, gotta go buy some tools.
We gonna make shirts that say “I WAS THERE! Mike’s S38 Pulling party 2006” ? Anyway, not much progress today, pulled a few more things off, talked to some people about machine work. More details another day.
The original post was kind of irrelevant as I’ve bumped this up on my priority list. I’d like to try and get the long block together and ready to go by spring. Granted, then I still have manifolds, and the issue of not having a chassis for it, etc, etc. But those are minor details. Goal is for JUST the long block. I’m sick of dicking around with this 2.5L 4 cylinder turbo bull shit, 3.6L DOHC Turbo Inline 6 FTW
Here are some photos from earlier this year, picking up my $500 M5, pulling the engine, sitting on the stand etc.
Jon (UrineMachine) and I picking the car up.
Lots of random stuff. (Thankfully we finally decided the barn could be a much nicer work place and we’ve since been cleaning so we could potentially get 3 cars in, or 2 with tons of work room).
Yay for milkshakes!
Engine pulled out, sitting on the stand, parts collected off the chassis that I wanted to keep, the rest was sold off for a profit. Total investment so far is in the black (not for long).
Well over the past 6 months the engine has just kind of been shuffled around my garage. I actually listed it and all the parts I had for sale on bimmerforums and almost decided to go a different route. I’ve debated what chassis to put it in, and just about every option. I think I finally have most of it figured out (so I say now hahahaha).
Pulled the accessory bracket off, and the crank pulley/trigger wheel. I had been spraying all this stuff for the past month and a half or so when I decided I was going to go ahead with this project. So needless to say, nothing bound, and was all very easy after the initial bit of torque.
I was having EXTREME difficulty with the crank bolt. I had snapped two breaker bars, and broken a number of other tools. My friend’s impact wouldnt touch it and I was debating hitting it with somone else’s ingersoll. Today I went out and got a new 3ft, 3/4" drive breaker, and put the largest thickest pole I had on it. After a lot of pressure, pulling the pipe off to hit the bolt head with a hammer, torquing again, etc, etc. The bolt FINALLY broke loose, which allowed me to attack the front case. I was quite careful with the circlips as I’ve had a bad experience before. Safety goggles on of course, I lost the one on the far left to an “Oh shit, PING PING PING PING where the hell did that go…” moment
Crank pulled out.
Pile of parts and bagged bolts to be cleaned and boxed up.
M30, M20, S38 (and a bunch of random boxes in the background which are the last of the main workspace clutter in the barn to be cleaned up.)
Hopefully sending the block out to get cleaned up in a week or two. Also have a cylinder head coming in next week.
you have no idea how jealous I am Mike, not only do you have an engine I’d dream of putting in my e30, but you spent the past few days pulling apart an engine instead of writing papers for class
