My Turn v. Buying new TV...educate me please!

seriously, there are so many better deals than just shopping at Best Buy. You will pay so much more for a tv that you could prob find for $500 cheaper online or through local shops.

Def go 120hz on lcd

k thanks guys…PM’d Lafengas too for his hookup.

edit:

the reason i was considering BestBuy is because they have the no interest for a year or 2 thing going on…i just don’t feel like dropping over a grand all at once. prob half down, and pay the rest off within a month or 2.

LG is a pretty meh brand…

Go with SHARP, Sony, Samsung, or Panasonic if you want a great brand.

If you’re looking for a bargain and also a decent TV…

Here is a 42" Samsung plasma + Free BluRay player and an HDMI cable for only ~$700!

It expires on August 10th, but I figured if you’re looking for cheap… there ya go.

For reference, I have a LN46a860 120Hz LCD and it cost me $1800 shipped. It is the thin model with an awesome 120Hz 1080P screen (not LED Backlit, that was $1000 more.) The 650, 750 and 850/60 all have the same screen/image. Differences are 650 is thick without internet capabilities, 750 has internet and is just as thick and 850 is thinner. The 550 has a lower quality screen (60hz) than a 650 but is also 1080P. The 450 only has 720P so it looks like it is even lower on the totem pole. It’s plasma though, so I don’t know about hz with those TVs or image quality. I didn’t research any of that. (This is what I learned from my research when I got my TV 6 months ago)

For THAT price… it may be the TV you’ve been looking for. Amazon.com reviews (35 of them) give it 5 stars out of 5…

plasma is a dying technology.

although since they double as space heaters they are great for buffalo winters!

funny u say that, cause my father just bought a new samsung 120hz lcd, and my plasma blows it away.

pic, blacks, etc…

funny u say that, my orange is so much squishier than my apple

:banghead:

^haha.

I’ve got a few new Samsung 52" LED’s. Pure awesomeness.

would you get a LG plasma 50" for $950 or a LG 47" LCD for $1150…

LCD. Not a fan of plasmas. Can find a better deal than $1150 for 47" though.

i know a pretty sweet deal where you can get a free ps3! like literally free!

People who want better blacks, deeper more accurate colors, with less blur and less artifacts go with plasma. People that want very bright washed out colors with grey blacks go with LCD. I will say that some of the newer led tv’s are getting close to plasma quality but not there yet.

That and I’m a big believer in not buying from stores such as BB, but I ended up getting it from there because they had a sale with the tv i wanted for $40 more than what I could have got it online for. They do have good deals once in a while.

For the OP if you have alot of windows in your room, go with an lcd, just for that reason alone.

I am also in the market for a TV, I am thinking about an LED tv. Thoughts?

Love my Panny Plasma. My parents recently got a new Sony LCD. It SUCKS for watching sports compared to my plasma. Maybe it’s not 120 hz or whatever, I don’t know, but they got it at Rosa’s and it wasn’t cheap. Oh, and some of the Panasonic plasmas at least have anti-glare coating.

i heard about this deal at bestbuy…an awesome 32inch TV…and you get a FREE PS3!!!

Pick up a Pioneer Kuro before they are gone forever. I love both of mine.

you realize that for the last two fiscal quarters, plasma market share was the only category that grew in HDTV purchases right?

wait for the 8500 series from samsung, or get an xbr8 from sony. those new LED LCD’s from samsung that are ultra thin use edge lighting and are garbage.

best advice in thread.

i don’t understand why people leg hump samsung LCD’s so much. how can you like such a bright, washed out, fake picture?

as for buying this TV. your best pricing will definitely be online. do check them out at best buy or something similar first. also don’t be afraid to let someone at best buy know you have some online pricing. i know when i worked at the galleria store, we would work real hard to be competitive with online pricing. i would always do the best i could to match a deal online. i couldn’t always do it, but i always wanted to keep business as local as possible. a lot of the guys there think the same way and will do the best they can for you.

as for the warranty, it’s hard to justify insuring something at more than 10% of the cost of the product. if nothing happens to the TV, it was a huge waste of money. if something does happen, you’ll be glad you have it. the price of replacement parts and labor don’t really justify fixing the tv. either way, don’t go into this expecting this tv to last you 20 years like the last one did. this is consumer electronics. i don’t care what you buy, they are all junk and will not last that long.

beat me to it!!!

Pretty much what everyone else said above… plasma for deeper, better colors and motion. LCDs for retina burning, inaccurate colors and god awful artifacting during motion. LCD motion SUCKS, period. If you think that 120hz is god’s gift to LCD you are wrong. It’s an improvement, not a fix. Don’t even look at buying anything over 120hz either, I can explain why if needed.

Yes, plasmas use more electricity. If you are worried about how much power your TV is going to consume, you should not be looking to buy a TV. If you are upgrading from a tube TV, most new plasmas will use less power anyway so forget that argument.

At the end of the day, your personal preference will lead you to purchase whatever model you so choose. I would say first, see it in person and look at comparable models to see what you like and don’t like.

Also, don’t be afraid to ask brick and mortar stores to price match online places. Just make sure the models numbers match up. Be at the store to do this and be polite. At the most, you’ll get a no… if not you’re going home with the TV at the price you wanted to spend but without the wait of shipping.
