Yes it is. Because we all know that the more tools you have the better you are at what you do right;).
Sorry had to be an ass.
Kinda have to agree with deathproof here though. You dont always need a torque wrench for everything but it helps specially when you are not an experienced mechanic and have not yet developed a feel. Now don’t get me wrong i would never put a engine together without one but im just saying that its not as critical in some parts as it is in others.
i can say this: I’d torque all the axle nuts properly as the aftermarket bearings have a bad rep for failing early. So if me torquing them down to the spec, I believe the saturn is 150 or 170, can help save the bearing i’ll do it everytime. It really is only like an extra minute of work and I guarantee any customer will wait an extra 2 minutes to have it done properly.
As for caliper brackets and such depends on vehicle, but i have taken time to torque those as well. Toyotas have a tendency to rust in real bad and snap off coming out and even going in. I’m a huge supporter of cleaning bolts.
That said, i suppose the amount of torque on the axle nut would theoretically slightly change the tolerance of the bearing’s inner race, but I don’t see it changing much. Temperature variations would have far more impact… so idk…
By comparison, it took me 3 hours to get the “bolt in” hub assembly out of one side of my truck. The other side only took 45 minutes. That was just for hub assembly removal, not counting taking apart everything else to get to them and reassembly. I’ve been a professional mechanic for 13 years. It was not lack of experience that made the job a complete pita.
Don’t be surprised if it takes all damn day to do the bearings on your car.
The only thing i disagree with is that the axle shaft gets rusty usually,so the torque isnt going to be enough.I had a new guy i work with that thought using the torque wrench was the proper way, well after the first trip around the block the wheel bearing was singing. So i ran it down with my impact and saved is ass,it was quiet then.I have seen this happen alot.I would say if you must use the toque wrench use a thread chaser on the threads.I have not had a comeback ever because one was to tight.
oh i hear ya. i clean the axle shaft. wire wheel and some lube and she’s good to go. This isn’t like anal sex with that girl you hate where you just throw it in dry!!!
OK, So I see a “1 hour and 45 minute job”. How about this. I’ll provide a warm garage and all the tools you could ever need, and 2 free hours of garage time. I’ll watch you do it. For every hour over 2 hours, it’ll cost you $100/hr for “garage rental”. Sound fair? Hell I’ll even take you out to dinner when you finish.
How the hell can people so simply put times on stuff like this?
