need help installing windows

so i got a laptop from my friend for free, he was having a few problems with it. i ran ubuntu off of a disk and it told me hard drive failure was eminent!

so i bought a new hd, put it in. i tried to install windows xp before ubuntu (the gf likes windows better) and i kept getting an error while windows is starting to install - pci.sys is corrupted. press any key to continue (which then restarts the computer)

it appears as if ubuntu is installing fine as we speak, so it seems as if this is only a fggt window issue

[doublerainbowguy] what does this mean?

I think your pci.sys file is corrupted.

it’s a sign from god…another ubuntu win

and ubuntu installed perfectly on this lappy, im currently using it

fuck windows, shits mad gay. only thing is i cant figure out how to sync my ipod touch. any ideas?

I think rythmbox works

Make sure the sata controller isn’t set to AHCI or raid.

Boot into Ubuntu, delete the pci.sys from X:\Windows\System32\Drivers…copy a known good pci.sys from a windows machine with the same XP version and SP.

That wouldn’t help if windows isn’t installed yet. He is getting that error when it starts to install.

Could be a failing cdrom drive or bad cd

I missed that in the Original Post…

Might have to install windows first then Ubuntu…I’m assuming there are separate partitions?

Remove all PCI cards and pci.sys isn’t needed.
I keed I keed.

Don’t you need to install Ubuntu first then windows? I thought that was the order I did it in back in the day. Ubuntu has a boot loader I think it like you to use. No?
Note: I haven’t touched Ubuntu for many years. LOL

FML I didn’t read…I was kinda sure that Ubuntu had to installed before Windows as well.
