Best bet is that your the 3200. Due to 2GB not loading but the 1GB will.
If you scan you should get something like this:

i was going to ask if your pc even supports up to 2gb of memory
I have a product key and serial number but thats all. They replaced the case under warranty last year and I think some of the stickers were still on the old one.
How do I scan it?
crucial.com has a utility on the front page that scans the computer model and recommends memory.
Your situation sounds like the computer does not support it.
scan from crucial is not working. One from another site is telling me 2gb max.
You got your facts wrong.
You have 4GB of allocated address on a 32-bit OS, shared with your CPU cache, graphic card memory. When you install 4GB of RAM, you will notice it reporting less than 4GB. Can be overcomes by PAE.
In a 64-bit environment, you can have more than 4GB.
Looks what I found on crucial website for your Dell Latitude D510
The maximum memory when using PC2-3200 (DDR2-400) is 1GB. The maximum memory when using PC2-4200 (DDR2-533) is 2GB. Celeron Processor based systems utilize an Intel 910GML chipsetAlthough the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.
I guess I misunderstood all of this. I thought 3200/4200 had to do with the model of laptop. I guess instead its the type of memory, correct?
My new memory is in fact pc2-4200
Sounds like the chipset couldn’t handle the RAMs…
Are both the new RAMS identical?
Could you give me their model number?
they are identical and they were confirmed by kingston that they would work.
kvr533d2so/1gr
I’m stuck too.
Theoretically, they should work fine.
Well, what i can think of right now is:
Get a different RAM.
OR
Clean your laptop. Maybe it is over heating. Laptop heat sinks easily clogged after a year of usage.
Have you tried updating BIOS?
The bios thing is really odd… Dell on their website says that they will not support the laptop anymore and therefore no updates for anything drivers/bios etc.
The BIOS right now are dated '06 and i’m sure there is an update out there somewhere but I don’t know how to go about finding the correct one.
Also on the heating issue, the memory does seem to heat up quickly when the computer freezes. I’ll have to see if I can find out how to clean the heat sink without screwing up stuff.
What I would do is :
That was what I did with my Dell laptop & my friends Dell laptop.
You could shine a flashlight through the vents to check for dust.
The computer definitely supports 2GB of RAM or it wouldn’t POST. Try running memtest86 with both sticks installed. If that passes I would try running a Windows repair - never had to do that when upgrading RAM before but who knows…
tried windows repair but it just said it could not fix the problem… did it 2-3 times now.
Download SeaTools for DOS - http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools
You’re going to have to burn it to a CD and boot from it. It’ll check your hard drive for problems. Run the short and long test.
Good idea. Test for a failing hard disk but SeaTools is only for Seagate/Maxtor.
You will need other tools for different hard disk.
I have no idea what that means. What do I need then?
SeaTools will work for any IDE/SATA drive.
BIOS updates aren’t put out as regular as other updates. So the latest update my have been from a couple years ago…especially for an older machine. I just updated a dell from A02 to A07 which came out in 2006.
