I decided to take a 30 mile drive to NJ (ick) with the wife to take a look at a BMW X3. It’s a NON CPO 2008 X3 AT with 18,400 miles white/tan with heater seats, privacy glass, and heated steering wheel.
The wife doesn’t make mistakes (sans me) so I felt good knowing I wouldn’t make a bad mistake. After looking at just about every 2008+ SUV ($28-$30K budget) that I could find, the X3 was still the leader. Unfortunately, the ML350 was priced out unless I went into the 40K mile mark.
My initial fears was whether or not I would be comfortable (I am a big man and like a lot of room; My previous Suzuki was VERY spacious), good sound system, something sporty (I had a 600HP 3000GT previously), 20+ city/highway MPG, AWD, sunroof, leather, etc. I am also REALLY big on clean interiors. Unfortunately, every car had an issue: Domestics (eh, no) -> MKX (ugly interior), Escalade (****ty MPG), Explorer (already had one), Escape (step child), RDX (too small), Rav4 (TIGHT), ML350 (Too much $$$), Q7/Q5 (FANTASTIC but $$$), etc.
The wife and I both drove it about 15-20 min each and I went over various driving conditions, gears, dead stops, hard/soft accelerations, etc. No tranny hesistation. Smooth. I guess I was hoping for something to reaffirm my fears but nothing. It felt better than any other car I have ever driven. A bit firm ride but it still feels solid. It must be driven to appreciated. Anyhow, the wife loves it especially the sunroof. There was 1 small ding and 1 scratch and 2 marks and now they are gone. There is a few marks on the black plastic on the exterior but you’d have to look from 2 feet or so in and they are few. Interior? 9.8 out of 10… I can’t find a scratch except a few on the BMW logo on the floor. Amazing.
We got there at 2PM and left at 8:45PM with the car. They matched my local credit union’s 4.49% for 5 years and the total price of the SUV was $26,800 + $300 for some stupid gap insurance (Fear got to me) which includes them paying off my trade-in which I made about $1K or so over what I would have gotten on the free market (assuming it sold).
Overall, I have no remorse (at least yet). I own my first BMW.
