New Daily: 03 VW GLI

I had been passively looking for a new daily because my current daily was getting pretty high in mileage, a friend of mine knew someone that wanted to trade her Jetta in at a dealer, they low balled her, so I bought it privately for cheap.

03 Jetta GLI with a 24 valve VR6, a 6 speed manual, and only 67k miles

It needed a good cleaning, but it’s in really good condition for a 10 year old black car, and the interior is stupid clean.

Finally go it into the garage, and was really happy with how clean it was underneath.

The filters on the other hand… were kind of scary…

Underside of the intake filter, which had pulled down into the box and wasn’t doing anything anymore…

And the rat’s nest I found on top of the cabin filter… thankfully no rat

And the original plugs, I swapped out with some OEM spec NGK’s

I pulled the air box out and clean the dust out of it

I also removed the pipe that feeds air from a tiny hole in the front grill to the air box, now it pulls air from behind the head light, which is much less restrictive… and it sounds sweet, haha

Replaced the original filter with a K&N drop in

Lastly I lowered it on a set of Pro-kit springs, which ended up being a good thing, because I found a broken spring when I pulled the front drivers side strut out

With more low.

Then winter came…

So I bought a set of 205/70-15 General Altimax Arctics for my winter setup, mounted them to some red steelies I picked up used for $50 in Buffalo. They’re about 1.6 inches taller than stock, so it raises the car and fills the wheel wells out pretty well. Also picked up a set of Rally Armor universal mud flaps to give my rockers some protection during the winter months.

Makes for a fun daily, and it does surprisingly well in the snow.

inb4vwhate.

very nice.

those leather seats that come in the GLI are way comfy.

Vr noises

Get an exhaust, let that 24v roar

FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU

I like that last picture, for some reason those wheels remind me of the original beetle.

More VR6 music!

Thanks guys

Definitely need an exhaust, planning on a Milltek so it isn’t too obnoxious on the highway.

Hopefully someone will rear end you in the snow and you will get a check from their insurance company. And then another POS VW will be wiped from the planet.

nice car… heated seats?

Not sure if srs?..

Yes, and it’s the first time I’ve had them… they’ve completed me…

<3

As serious as a heart attack brought about by AIDS

Cool story I guess.

I finally finished my winter setup, I’ve had these lights sitting around for a couple months now, and last weekend I finally finished building the light bar and wired them up.

2 Hella 500FF driving lights up top, and 2 Hella 500 fog lights on the bottom, they aren’t quite aimed perfectly but after bombing around the back roads last night, they are pretty damn bright!

And I grabbed a pic on my way home tonight

Any chance you want to build another light bar?

have you developed the intake rattle yet? and be-careful on hard shifts the forks like to come apart on the 02M, ive pulled a few apart and welded the fork there is a great write up on Vortex.

After that one, not really, haha

No intake rattle or problems with the trans, but it just ticked over 90k. I’m usually pretty nice to the trans, it’s so much better than the GM crap I was used to.

winter setup is AWESOME!!!

where do you have the bar mounted?

I was going to use the 13mm bolts that holds the rad support to the frame (going threw the grills (modifying my also fog light grills), then run something into the bumper to the metal crash bar I wanted to build something strong enough to take a deer hit.

needs moar lights!

Thanks, I’m pretty happy with it

The upper support mount at the hood latch, the lowers go to the mounts just to the left and right of the radiator, sounds like the same points you’re describing. I picked up a spare upper grill, since I had to cut it up a bit to clearance the upper mounts.

This bar is designed to collapse in an impact, I wouldn’t suggest trying to build a structural bar, doing so would seriously mess up the way the uni-body is designed to crumple. Much different than a framed car.

Almost forgot, I cut the muffler off and welded a universal Magnaflow on, retaining the stock tips, so it looks stock, but now with more VR noises!
