a few years ago, Thanksgiving Eve i was helping a friend move from buffalo to Lewiston. Went to go home over the GI bridge, just to find out i left my wallet at his house. Luckily it was 3am and the lady asked for my id, which i obv didnt have after i said i had no cash on me, and there was a line forming behind so she just said go.
Up until late 2010 they were cash only across Canada. There was a intermediate period when they accepted their own gift cards and some MasterCard quick pay thing in addition to cash if memory serves. Now they accept mostly anything.
I always have cash on me. I’ll use the card when I can but don’t like using it to buy $5-10 worth of stuff and a mom-n-pop establishment. That said, I had my septic pumped last week and they only accepted cash or check. My checkbook was somewhere at my old house and I certainly didn’t have $250+ cash on me. I had to meet the guy at a convenience store across town to use their ATM. Stupid.
Going on a few hundred mile journey through another country with a rental car and not even a couple bucks in your pocket?
Got out of using cash at all for while but having tenants requires it…the ones that pay cash always need change…so you have a bunch of 100s and a 5…thanks a lot
