Newman's 1986 BMW 326rb build thread.

Reminds me ofhttp://imcdb.org/images/157/690.jpg

But I love it.

Engine originally came from a front clip. It was in a skyline for a little while running with little issues. It never saw above 14psi when we had it back in the day. I don’t know of it’s history before hand but anything is possible from JDM land.

The scoring of the bores is from the rings, engine had a rebuild at some point. The pistons that were in it were +.5mm over.

Good times.

X2^

im gunna have to disagree here. piston rings dont go to the tippy top of the cylinder wall and the head looks like its been stabbed with an ice pick a billion times. Definately detonation. some of the scoring could be blamed on rings from over expansion but not all of it. Someone at somepoint beat this sucker hard.lol good times.

Don,

Bores measured out at 86mm. Pistons were oem. I’m blaming detonation and pieces of turbo.

If you look closely most of the scores do not reach the top of the bore, in fact they stop just below the ridge line. Perhaps the pics do not show this detail well enough. The head doesn’t look that bad in person, seriously it doesn’t. There are signs of detonation but that is not severe detonation. I have a cylinder head that we can compare to see what severe detonation looks like :stuck_out_tongue:

Newman, interesting. Measure twice, order once :stuck_out_tongue: However regardless I would have went 87 anyway. Do the pistons you removed look like factory units?

I measured like 10 times. The pistons i pulled are certainly OEM

I’m sure you did, I wasn’t doubting that, that was just a small joke based on our conversation the other night. I was also saying that even if you hadn’t I would have gone with 87 regardless.

THERE’S NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT…

Is 87mm the max bore size you can go to, or is that leaving room for future block life? (another clean up)

I can go to 87.5 if I ever need to. However, If i trash this block, I’d probably just get another one.

Before: 2.568L
After: 2.629L

WOOOOOOOOOOOO

Axles installed, rear swaybar endlinks installed, rear shocks and springs installed.

Hey brahski im gonna be in town next weekend. I would love to come take a gander at the project while I am there. I will also be setting foot in my new house for the first time lol.

^Finally. I dont wanna hear jeff cry anymore.

And, Newman is like a 1/4 mile pass away from your new place. I expect some action out of that.

Newman - car’s looking “good”, progress. LMK if you really wanna hand wrenching. my shit is “done” other then cleanup work.

Nice progress. Sucks about the “surprise” with the block but looks like you got it all worked out

I brought all the motor parts into work with me today.

I am going to degrease them, start glass beading all the bare aluminum parts and sandblast all the parts that are going to get powder coated.

The motor is going to look brand new. I would like to glass bead the head, but I really don’t feel like tearing it apart, so i’ll be cleaning that by hand. Everything else will get some attention.

 It’s coming along nicely Newman.

this is going to be so tits.

the lotus and this bimmer are going to look VERY odd parked together.

Oh snap.

Just saw the engine parts that came out of the powdercoating oven.

Looks fuckin tits.
