Newman's 1986 BMW 326rb build thread.

When you sync’d the timing did you use a plug wire between number one coil and the plug?

i love the car, i just wish that fucking moustache would die

must be incredibly satisfying to be wrapping this build up. so much time and money. It was worth it all though, the car looks awesome

I Never said it was finished. i said wrapping up… haha

It was previously timed. In this case we just wanted to see if timing was advancing/retarding heavily or jumping around to confirm the triggering issue. It sounded to me like timing was going way off, but we weren’t sure if it was dropping a cylinder from a misfire or firing the coils off time. When timing goes off really far either way it sounds similarly bad and I wanted to know if it was advancing or retarding too. For this test we clipped onto the trigger wire for the #1 coil. It was staying where it should be from idle to over 3000 RPM, then suddenly went way advanced AND jumped around which was all we needed to see.

On standalones we’ve been checking timing during cranking, getting them running well enough and broken in enough to free rev them out to redline to check for drift and adjust it out if I’m using a system that has an option for that. We haven’t got that far yet on this car, but we’ll do it when the time comes with a spark tester in line so we can clip on its plug wire. That will happen before we boost it.

In for tuning updates

I bought a vipec ECU to replace the AEM… it’ll be here next week. Sit tight til then…

why did you do that?

because the AEM is a bag of shit and won’t cooperate.

Is the Vipec compatible with the Aem plug? or do you have to re-wire the whole shooting match?

Both ECUs use the stock skyline harness plug. The only issue is that the Serial interface I bout for the dash will no longer work, so I’ll need to directly wire it to my ecu tach output. I will also have to add in my analog inputs. That’s going to be the biggest pain…

Good luck man!

Made this case for my new ECU, because it’s just a board that fits in the stock case…

Haha, nice. I like that.

Man Newman you are not fuckin around!
