Well i can buy hardened axles for 1000 dollars…
but i didn’t.
Instead I bought 4 used axles for 100 shipped… they’re easy enough to change, so that’s what I am gonna use for the time being.
in the event an axle breaks, what is the possibility of indirect damage to the rear end?

Not terrible… People break axles all the time, it usually doesn’t damage much.
