Newman's Snowboard/Wakeboard winch build...

Try using a snowmobile to pull you up to a handrail in the city or putting a jet ski in Hoyt lake. Plus snowmobiles are a pain in the ass to move around. This will fit in my car.

Yeah I guess the “urban” part requires something other than a sled.
I have bad images in my head of you smacking off of a light standard though. lol
Wear a helmet at least!

How is this mounting to the ground? Would it be advantageous to have it be able to mount to a trailer hitch?

I bet a chain wrapped around a pole or tree with a carabiner attaching it to the winch should hold it steady

what are the ratio’s and at what rpm?

I’d never heard of a wakeboard winch before so I had to go look for some vids of how you use one.

This is far more awesome than your professional looking design though:

It seems like it would get boring really fast because you get a short pull then have to take off the board, walk back pulling the line and put the board back on for each run. I wakeboard a lot in the summer and wakeboard bindings aren’t the most fun to put on. We keep a squirt style water bottle with a mix of dish soap and water in it as “foot lube” to make squeezing into the bindings a little easier.

Why not just get a boat? I have to admit though it does have me looking at the glass smooth retention pond outside my office window a little differently now.

I think it needs to be portable and light enough to be carried to “Closed” off places from vehicles and what not. Maybe some type of frame you could steak to the ground or have someone stand on it to provide some leverage for the person being pulled. Also, this setup would need to sit on dirt, snow, ice, and possibly concrete/asphalt which would contradict putting a steak in the gound.

I’m guessing here though…

Lol, why spend 500 dollars on a wakeboard winch when you could have a lifetime of headaches associated with boat ownership. No thanks.

It comes down more to it being capable of use in an urban environment, ease of use and cost. I don’t like owning things that I need to trailer anywhere. It was my biggest gripe with my jet ski.

Anyway, it’s more for doing tricks than going on a joyride. If you just like cruising, then yeah, probably not for you. But if you like hiking snowboard parks, this is what’s up.

As far as attaching it: nylon webbing or similar if there’s something to sling to, otherwise have to get creative or stake to the ground.

Gear ratios on the clutch are 2.7 lowside to .9 overdrive. Available chainring ratios are 1:4,1:5,1:6. Max engine speed is 3600 rpm. Clutch begins to engage at 2200 rpm.

Cool, you should make a detachable support frame that slides into a standard trailer hitch. That way in winter you can just connect it to the back of the rabbit and board anyplace you want to. It would also help support driving while boarding situations.

yeah, I saw a picture of one attached to a trailer hitch and it seemed like a pretty good idea to me.

Agreed. However, rabbit doesn’t have a hitch, and it DEF doesn’t have a class 3/4 hitch, which is what you’d need to just shove it in… Maybe if I get some speed rated wheels for it, (the ones I have are not for highway use). However, i think the whole thing is going to weigh less than 100 lbs, so I should be able to lift it into the back of my car.

yeah, on top of that, I would venture to say that you’ll most likely have one or two friends with ya too, so that really shouldn’t be an issue.

theres so many paeople missing the point of this it seems. i guess you have to be born a shredder to understand. just in case you find you want to use a snowmobile as a tow vehicle for other flamboastin, ive got one

I think it would BADASS for wakeskating. You could easily find or bring some cool rails to a local pond or small lake and shred a little fun box or rail with a wake skate. That at least eliminates the binding issue.

I agree with newman and dirtye30 though, I’ve hiked my fair share of parks and sled hills with a snowboard for some fun on 1 hit. It’s a lot of work, but you get pretty quick repetitions as apposed to a chair lift. Even wakeboarding, if there is one specific rail or jump you want to hit, you would have to hit it, then have the boat go all the way around in a circle to bring you back. Probably not a huge savings as apposed to hopping out of bindings, unwinding a rope, and hitting it again. DEFINITELY not worth the cost of a Truck + boat + everything else that comes with that.

But what if this machine falls off of the boat and through the ice?

Is there a simple way to link the throttle to the brake? Keep the brake normally engaged, disengaging as your engine revs approach 2200. A manual override wouldn’t be a bad thing to have anyways.

Regardless, nice project

In honor of Joe Dirt:

Cool project Newman, this is what it’s all about right here. Let me know when this is done… I have some handrails, gaps, and terrain in the city that this application would be perfect for…

If you wakeboard or snowboard for practical use, you just wouldn’t understand.

i have a footprint gas pedal if you need it.

I’m just gonna run it on the laser.

first few pics made me think, wtf, why not put a set of wheels on it like a hand truck? then you’re last post COMPLETES me w/the footprint gas pedal.

Need anything powdercoated?
