I used to pull news groups via outlook express. Is this the only way to get news groups or are there other apps/programs to do so?
Outlook and Thunderbird give you text only Usenet which is often available for free through your ISP. If you are looking to download files and such, you are going to need to pay for premium access. These services give you high retention (how long files are viewable) and high speeds (I average 2MBps when I download). To access these, you need something like BNR2 or Newsleecher.
^ thanks man
newshosting.com (cheap and fast, compared to giganews, which is a ripoff)
then get grabit, newsleecher, altbinz. etc
Then download.
i love grabit…been using it for years. I just havent used it recently because roadrunner groups aren’t nearly as complete as they used to be- and i dont feel like paying for other access.
i switched to altbinz, grabit was giving me errors on some shit when it was decoding.
I use Giganews and am very happy with them, but I’ll check Newshosting out and see if they’re just as good, thanks
I use usenetserver.com and never had a problem
I’ve been using usenetserver.com for years. They have the best price out there for unlimited downloads and SSL it seems.
^ I’m sure there are others but I don’t use Windows.
If you are using a Mac get Unison. By far the best newsgroup app out there.
so once I sign up for something like newhosting, and I setup my newgroup reader application, then I just search for content to download?
Use binsearch.info to get nzb files and then i used http://nzb.sf.net for a quick downloader. When I really want to browse groups and look for random stuff on my own, NewsLeecher was the best application for it, just had to find a crack for it.
Agreed, Unison has won awards.
Some newsreaders will let you search but this is how I do it:
- Search a Usenet indexing service to find the content you want. I use http://newzbin.com. The indexing service will give a .nzb file that contains the links for all the different pars & parity files that make up whatever you download.
- Load the .nzb file into your newsreader that is configured to connect to your newsgroup server. The newsreader downloads stuff.
- Use WinRar to unpack and combine all the small .rar files. Since sometimes some of the .rars become corrupted parity files are included. QuickPar can usually rebuild from the parity files.
wanna hit me up with a newzbin invite?
It’s a pay service but you can use my account. I share it among a few people. Sent you a PM.
thanks a ton
