Newzbin users... what's your plan B?

same, very nice replacement site.

A one time $10 “donation”, yea. Well worth it when you consider you’re already paying $10/mo anyways

The next hearing in court is mid April. Until then we are required to implement a default policy of blocking movies and TV reports. These will need to be manually authorised by us before they are published. This is cumbersome and, we appreciate, deeply unwelcome. Rest easy that it is temporary and will only last until we can get into court or until we implement a less onerous automatic filter.

Well that didn’t take long. Notice on newzbin’s main page right now.

No bother, nzbmatrix seems better than newzbin anyway. I’m re-downloading a bunch of stuff that I couldn’t find in HD on newzbin that nzbmatrix had no problem finding.

Are you using newsgroups mainly for TV/Movies?

TV/Movies/Software/360games/iPhoneApps

This NZB queue deal is pretty sweet.

nzbmatrix is awesome

thanks for the recommendations

nzbmatrix + SABnzbd = SOOOO much downloading.

500gb + 1TB + 1.5TB and I’m down to about 400GB free again.

This time I’ll be adding a 2TB drive though. Glad I went with a 6 sata port MB and kept my optical drives IDE.

Also the nzbmatrix RSS feed for TV:HD and filter for your shows == kick ass interwebz DVR

bye bye newzbin

Newzbin gossip May 18, 2010

Things are moving fast at everyones favourite Usenet indexer Newzbin. A Newzbin Editor let slip some interesting gossip to me on IRC. Apparently Newzbin has been put into administration yesterday because it couldn’t pay its debts. Word is that they owe the MPA £230,000 just in interim costs, and that’s without a full costs ruling or a decision on damages. Apparently they also owe a software development house over £500k. They also stopped taking payments a few weeks back. Fucking ouch.

I predict Newzbin is toast.

Does it mean the end of the service for users? Maybe not. While I can’t see how Newzbin can dig themselves out of this hole or carry on, there have been odd developments. Users have been pressing Newzbin to Opensource the site code but they’ve refused. However the rumour is that someone hacked their servers and grabbed the code and several databases. I PM’d a Newzbin guy and he denied knowing anything about this but the rumours are strong. Added to which Newzbin have been hacked before: about 5 years ago a database of their Paypal transactions ended up on Usenet! (Oh the irony) And another Usenet indexer also turned up running, ahem, similar looking code.

If that is right I’m guessing a clone site will spring up soon, or maybe several.

Update:

Wow. Slightly freaked that Newzbin has both closed AND linked to this blogpost to give an explanation. Just to say, I am nothing to do with Newzbin but I am (OK, was, it would seem) an editor and I knew the original guys fairly well via IRC.

I’ll see if I can get answers to questions asked below and post the replies in new blogposts.

As someone in comments said, there is a newzbin users group on irc.freenode.net #newzbin

Update 2 – 19th May

Heh… until you screw up the filter and it downloads 500GB of shows you don’t want when you’re not looking.

So long and thanks for all the fish.

The RSS API is crashy, it went down for a bit and when it came back up redownloaded like 2 weeks worth of shows again. Not perfect but still works reasonably well. Sometime I think it would be easier to torrent tv shows though. Since eztv.has a stable RSS feed.

Here is an interesting tidbit of nerd fact.

Today, Duke University will be shutting down our usenet/newsgroup servers. Duke is the home of newsgroup/usenet…A sad sad day. :tear:

http://www.dukenews.duke.edu/2010/05/usenet.html

a sad sad day?, so you dl stuff from dukes usenet servers alot? lol
dukes usenet is useless

no, but it is the original!!

I am not really sad about it, just thought I would share. I found it interesting.

You do know that usenet and newsgroups are used for more than just downloading illegal crap though, right?

edit: in retrospect, this doesn’t really fit the topic of this thread, but I figured all the people that would find this interesting would be checking this thread anyways

yes i know what newsgroups are and what can be found on them, dont forget im old and started on bbs.

Hi ex-Newzbin user.

Lamenting the departed site? Dreading doing Usenet the old skool
way? Think the clone NZB sites suck?

Good news: we are Newzbin Two, and we have glad tidings:
NEWZBIN IS BACK! and we are the new management. The crew got most
of the original Newzbin source code and the main databases.
We loved it too much to let it die.

The catch? We wont be up for a very short while cos things need
to be done. For starters we need a cool domain name; also we
need to hack on the code some more to make it run. We are nearly
there but it is very complicated. We reckon we’ll up very soon.

So don’t drift off to those lame-ass wannabe NZB sites. Hang on
for a little longer and the Big Dog will be back.
