Speed limits in Buffalo are far too low anyways. I come up there to visit and feel like slow motion.
Is it due to the winter weather they just have super low speed limits?
I can’t think of one highway that is 55mph down here. 55 is a side road.
The slowest highway I can think of is 70mph and most of them are 75 or 80.
I don’t see how the winter weather could force something like this. If that were the case then it would make much more sense just to have severe weather-imposed speed limits or seasonal speed limits for winter driving.

Part of the problem is people don’t understand how traffic flow works. They see a 3.3 mile long 198 and say “It’s 4 minutes end to end at 50mph and only 6.6 minutes at 30mph. Is 2.6 minutes really that big a deal”. Simple math like that works great for a single car but the dynamics of moving thousands of cars going 60mph off the 190 and 33 onto a 30mph connector is a lot more complex. Think about how badly heavy traffic backs up when just a single car slows down on the highway.

This is a terrible incident. Barriers should have been used years ago.
Lowering the speed limit is dumb. During rain storms, 50mph could be pretty sketchy, but most people do not have major problems.
it may seem like it would only be a 2 minute add to a commute, but the masses are dumb. You will undoubtably have more cars on the 198 because it’s a bottleneck during rush minute. More cars WILL lead to more problems.
How many people are going to smash into the barrier now just because it was all over the news?
I bet there will be at least four 30mph wrecks by the end of July and prove just how the new safety barriers saved the dandelions
