doesnt work like that buddy. infact it has very little to do with “miles” of use at all. Heck, the moment you fire the car about half the readiness checks are performed right there. Secondary air injection for instance. if the engine is cold, the SAI pump should be triggered to turn on and lean out the car for warmup, then shut off at XXX temp later. So without even putting it in gear and moving, if your SAI system isnt working (turning on, leaks, flows wrong, etc) not only will the readiness say fail/incomplete it will throw a code and moments later the CEL will be on.

Speaking of which, John correct me if I am wrong, but you are allowed 2 failed/incomplete readiness, (<- rather sure on that one) and 1 or 2 codes but NO visual check engine light (<-not so sure on that one).

or… if you are cool like some of us, you can hard set the ecu’s 8 readiness checks to pass, CEL’s codes can be set to be ignored and wont have much to worry about come inspection time. :ninja So I hear.

Your partially right, but also partially wrong. Certain readiness tests are run at start up and others require a certain amount of time/miles to run them. SAI for instance is run on a cold start only, where as EVAP and catalyst require cold start and about 10 miles of driving. The 50 mile thing is generally what shops tell customers so they drive the cars long enough to set the monitors. Also the I/M monitors run differently for each manufacturer so what works to squeak a GM by might not work on other makes and vice versa.
