Politicians need two things VOTES and MONEY.
Regular people provide the votes, interest groups provide the money.
They do a charade to get the votes as they aren’t expected to do anything nor can they do anything while running to please the people with votes, and once in office they concentrate on pleasing people with money and their policies reflect that.

As the New York Assembly closed down for the summer several items sat in front of them for voting. One of them included the legalization of professional Mixed Martial Arts fighting (UFC) in the state; that was not approved. Another bill in front of them, that seemed more important, to ban novelty lighters in the state, did pass though.

as somebody who actually knows how many bull shit laws get passed all the time, the ignorance of everyone in this thread makes me laugh more then the fact that we are trying to ban novelty lighters.
and so all of you know, just because it passed the assembly does not mean it becomes law, for laymens tearms, it needs to pass two houses and then be signed into law to become law (its a lot more complicated then that but i don’t want to make everyones head explode)
It did pass both houses, and since NY is a nanny state it’s very likely the governor will sign it.
And I say this as someone who was pushing this bill on behalf of a client.
