Obama skips the Boy Scouts' 100th Anniversary Jamboree... for "The View"!

Ok, I’m not sure how to take this…

Yes, Obama’s not obligated to do anything for the Boy Scouts, but you’d figure if a National meeting of some 40-odd thousand Scouts during their 100th Anniversary is happening nearby (Fort AP Hill, Virginia), you might make a quick 5-minute speech in person (especially as the Honorary head of the BSA). But the President made a decision months in advance to attend some fundraisers and a taping of “The View” this week instead.

Now I understand the need to do news interviews and set certain priorities, but going to an interview on “The View” over a Centennial Jamboree?

Being a boy scout or eagle scout is an honor to. It’s one of the few things that gets you into West Point or the Air Force Academy without congressional sponsorship. Oops.

Yeah, definitely a bad move on his part.

man, he is such a D

MAN, THAT FUCKING GUY IS A FUCKING ASSHOLE

Just another thought… the Scouts are 100 years old this year, and of the 18 men who were POTUS during that time, only one was an Eagle - and he wasn’t elected as POTUS (Ford). And as GWB and WJC quit after Cubs, I suppose being an Eagle Scout is contrary to being elected POTUS.

OTOH, a good chunk of the astronauts in NASA were/are Eagles - and include Neil Armstrong (Apollo 11), Roger Chaffee (died in Apollo 1), Charlie Duke (Apollo 16), Donn Eisele (Apollo 7), Jim Lovell (Apollo 13), William McCool (died in Columbia STS 107), Ellison Onizuka (died in Challenger STS-51L) and Richard Truly (Columbia STS-2 - second flight)

Fucking Muslim.

Rev up that outrage engine, everyone: President Obama is disrespecting the Boy Scouts!

Or so the conservative blogs and Fox News would have you believe. Upon learning that the president’s schedule will not allow him to attend the Boy Scouts of America’s Jamboree in person, the Raging Right has roared into action.

It all started with this post on CNS News, a site parented by the Media Research Center in order to counter the alleged “liberal bias in many news outlets.” The title chosen for this post in CNSNews.com‘s “endeavor to fairly present all legitimate sides of a story” was Obama Won’t Speak In-Person at Boy Scouts’ 100th Anniversary Celebration But Will Appear on ABC TV’s ‘The View.’

Of course, the first paragraph acknowledges that the president will be addressing the Scouts via a videotaped message, and the rest of the article documents that presidential appearances at the Jamboree have historically been spotty, so the title could have easily been Obama Won’t Speak In-Person at Boy Scouts’ 100th Anniversary Celebration But Will Appear Via Videotaped Remarks. But fake objectivity is a stern taskmaster and one that required framing the story as Obama choosing a TV talk show over the historic Boy Scouts anniversary celebration.

Ben Dimiero of MediaMatters points out:

The CNS article includes several points that should (in a sane media world) mitigate the inevitable freak-out from conservative media figures:

■Obama will be addressing the Boy Scouts via a taped message.
■Several previous presidents — including conservative hero Ronald Reagan — did not address a Boy Scouts jamboree in person.
■The Boy Scouts just visited the oval office two weeks ago.
The CNSNews article actually documents the recent – and less than recent – history of presidential addresses to the Jamboree, starting with the fact that the first Jamboree was attended by FDR in 1937. It then skips ahead to the Bush era:

Obama’s three predecessors spoke at the event – George H. W. Bush in 1989 and Bill Clinton in 1998 in-person, and George W. Bush who spoke via video in 2001 when bad weather prevented him from traveling. George W. Bush did speak in-person at the 2005 Jamboree.

First Lady Nancy Reagan addressed the Jamboree in 1985, the first year someone from the White House had spoken there since President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. Prior to Johnson, President Harry Truman was joined by then-General and future President Dwight D. Eisenhower, both of whom spoke at the 1950 Jamboree in Valley Forge.

Presidents Nixon, Reagan, Carter and Ford did not speak at a Jamboree and President John F. Kennedy was assassinated before the Jamboree in 1964 when Johnson spoke.

So it’s not exactly unprecedented that a president would fail to appear in person at the Boy Scouts Jamboree. The only reason this is a (fake) big deal to the conservative irrationati is a) it’s Obama, and b) the fact that part of his scheduling conflict is an appearance on The View.

Even the Boy Scouts of America are not upset with the president, having issued this statement:

“Due to his schedule, President Obama will not be able to attend the 2010 National Scout Jamboree,” the statement reads. “In February, the President sent a letter honoring the BSA’s 100th Anniversary and his signature appears on Eagle Scout cards.”

“Also, he has welcomed Boy Scouts contingents in the Oval Office twice since taking office,” the statement reads. “President Obama serves as the Honorary President of the BSA, as has every President since Howard Taft. While each President is traditionally invited to attend the Jamboree, not every President has been able to attend the event.”

“We thank the President for his effort to recognize Scouting and look forward to working with his administration as we work toward accomplishing our mission of preparing young people to become exceptional adults,” the statement concludes.

So if you should be perusing the conservative blogosphere and come across headlines like Obama Missing Historic Boy Scout Jamboree for Fundraisers, ‘View’ Taping or Campaigner-in-Chief Snubs The Boy Scouts 100 Year Anniversary Jamboree For An Appearance On The View, just channel Sarah Palin and invoke Shakespeare – for this is truly much ado about nothing.

Umm yea. As if the Boy Scouts would actually publish a statement saying “we’re pissed that a man that bills himself as a ‘transformational President’ refuses to come to our 100th Anniversary party”.

And yes, other predecessors have elected not to speak in person at a Jamboree, but then again, how many times will there be a specially scheduled 100th Anniversary Jamboree - and the last one to be held at Fort AP Hill, Virginia?

I think you are all over-playing the importance of the BSoA in this day and age…

but F that MFing Prez, what a DB

Let me get this straight…

Obama, like every other president is invited to speak at the BSA event.
Obama has other obligations that had been scheduled months in advance that, let’s be honest here, would reach MUCH more people. (Yeah, lots of people watch The View)
People are now upset.

Does that sum it up correctly? Or was he invited to the BSA event months in advance and ditched it for The View?

I don’t care who is president currently. I honestly think it would have been the better choice to attend something like this. The BSoA has played a major role in helping shape future mentors and leaders. It’s an organization built on honor, trust and loyalty. Hence when applying for West Point or the AF academy you either have to have a Congressional recommendation or be an Eagle Scout.

That to me says a lot about the organization, barring the pedo shit. Either way it just seems like for all the things that a president could do for publicity etc it would be awesome and more respectful to pay homage to an organization like this on it’s 100th anniversary in person etc. IMO it would have been nice that’s all.

The View will help him with his falling popularity numbers by getting in front of the only remaining group dumb enough to still believe his bullshit; the people who watch The View.

The people he’d be slinging his bullshit to at the jamboree are already set to vote for “Change Part 2” in November.

He has only one mode and that’s campaign mode.

Funny how you can spin a story by cherry picking the facts. The Boy Scouts jamboree is a week long event, and the boy scouts basically said that they would make room for him any time he would have been available. The View interview is just one of the things in Obama’s schedule during the Jamboree. According to the White House, he can’t make it to the Jamboree because of Democratic Fundraisers, not because of the view.

But whatever, it sounds more offensive to say he is disappointing 45,000 good kids to have 4 feminazis polish his knob on a morning talkshow.

…For the record, I think it’s gay that he’s appearing on the view at all. I just don’t give a shit about him missing the jamboree. Hell, Reagan (peace be upon him) didn’t go to any…

Why is this news? Who gives a shit? The guy committed to another event, end of story.

QFT.

Thanks Fry. So not only is The View more important, but so is his fundraising. See earlier comment about only knowing how to campaign.

I actually agree with you Jay. But if you’re going to hate him, hate him for the whole truth not just the most indignant stuff. :stuck_out_tongue:

MAN WHAT A FUCKIN D-BAG

I do applaud the one Dem who came out and said the office of the President of the United States should have more dignity than going on the view. But, where ever there is a demographic that might help prevent him from basically becoming a half term president you’ll probably find Obama between now and November.

Boy Scouts always seemed super faggy to me. That and the kids who were in it were all the ones who didn’t have any other friends at school, and the dads that did it were all the ones that would pat their sons’ teammates on the ass when they made a good play in sports.

Maybe the president didn’t want to hang with a bunch of closeted homosexuals.

the worst.
