Obama's new chief of staff supports a draft?

Has anyone on here read his book before? Can anyone verify this?

Yes we can – draft your ass
by J.D. Tuccille, jd@tuccille.com
You know, I warn, and I warn, and I warn, and I warn, but nobody listens. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Read on …
Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, President-Elect Obama’s choice for chief of staff in his incoming administration, is co-author of a book, The Plan, that calls for, among other things, compulsory service for all Americans ages 18 to 25. The following excerpt is from pages 61-62 of the 2006 book:
It’s time for a real Patriot Act that brings out the patriot in all of us. We propose universal civilian service for every young American. Under this plan, All Americans between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five will be asked to serve their country by going through three months of basic training, civil defense preparation and community service. …
Here’s how it would work. Young people will know that between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five, the nation will enlist them for three months of civilian service. They’ll be asked to report for three months of basic civil defense training in their state or community, where they will learn what to do in the event of biochemical, nuclear or conventional attack; how to assist others in an evacuation; how to respond when a levee breaks or we’re hit by a natural disaster. These young people will be available to address their communities’ most pressing needs.
Emanuel and co-author Bruce Reed insist “this is not a draft,” but go on to write of young men and women, “the nation will enlist them for three months of civilian service.” They also warn, “[s]ome Republicans will squeal about individual freedom,” ruling out any likelihood that they would let people opt out of universal citizen service.
As chief of staff, Emanuel will not be in a position to directly introduce public policy, but his enthusiasm for compulsory service, combined with Barack Obama’s own plan to require high school students to perform 50 hours of government-approved service, suggest an unfortunate direction for the new administration.

Emanuel and co-author Bruce Reed insist “this is not a draft,” but go on to write of young men and women, “the nation will enlist them for three months of civilian service.”

I agree with it. I think everyone should spend a term in the military

Sorry, I’ve played enough counterstrike to realize that even if you are the best player in the world and go 30 kills over everyone elses 10, you somehow always end up 30/1. That one guy that you didn’t see gets you

It is called the Gestapo. OBAMA YOUTH!
Of course the media didn’t bother asking Obama about the civilian security force when he mentioned it a while back, just like they didn’t ask him about a lot of things.
Now they are back peddling and it is funny to watch.
Some have actually called him creepy since the election. lol

LOL cause modern warfare is just like Counter strike

:tinfoilhat:

this is gay

im assuming u have served, or u wouldn’t have this view.

yeah, lets forget about individual freedom.

The government is our father and should be allowed to make us do chores, since they own us.

Have you ever studied the founding fathers? If you did you would understand why they were against mandatory service.

I do well in Call of Duty modern warfare

Hahahah thats awesome. Real life doesn’t have anti cheat either. No guarantee that someone with a curbside bomb or some c4 strapped to their chest can’t come running in and BOOM.

Um…no. Not worth it. The military can’t pay me enough to go serve let alone requre me to do it for free. I would leave the country if this was the case. If they did give me a gun and sent me to Iraq I would open fire on my own troops to prove a point.

If Obama sticks to his policies and gets out of these stupid wars and focus only on Afganistan and getting the people who harmed up, there wouldnt be a need for a draft.

My point was that no matter how good you are, there is always that “unknown” that’ll kill your ass.

I don’t want to go fight anyone. Dying isn’t on my agenda in the next 60 years.

Fry,
baaaaaaaaah, baaaaaaaaah.
Obama is your shepherd.

With the youth of this era, I feel you should serve. Of course I’m ok with exceptions like… If you are in college you are exempt, if you are disabled you are exempt. yadda yadda.

Serve as in what? Going to fight for the country or fixing planes or something in hawaii?

Great point to prove. Just open fire on your own guys and completely ruin the life that you would have.

Remeber not every job in iraq is a infantry job, there are intel jobs, service jobs … blah blah blah

Who said I’m “fighting for my country” the job that I have does not put me into harms way, and will not put me into harms way, because I’m trained in what I do, and they just won’t take me from what I do. If it came down to it where they needed me to grab a gun and go at it. You bet your ass I would be in there doing exactly that

Ruin the life I have?

I built a life here. I went to school. Got 2 degrees. Been working full time. Saving up money.

How would a phone call “Oh ya, its your time to go serve a year in Iraq” not ruin that?

Cut the shit. Post this crap in the republican bitching thread. He’s your president too, you might as well wait until he actually does something to start whining.

I was referring to mandatory service after high school. Sure you have the life you have now and it would suck for them to just grab you and go.

If you are a part of the country why wouldn’t you help the cause, yes many people are oppose to Iraq and why we are there, but at least have some respect for the country you are in and think, "hey I really do live in the best country in the world, (shut up about the small euro countries) maybe I should give a little back to the country that allowed me to have the life that I do.

edit: and with the experience you have… the last thing they would do would be to give you a gun.
