OBD Readiness - I'm Not Ready - Help

NYS Inspection time and cannot get into “ready” mode. I swear I drove it 3 weeks since the last battery reset.

This AM I had Catalyst Monitor, Evap System Monitor and O2 Monitor still not ready.
Tried to follow the generic OBD prep on a cold engine…and got the 02 to pass readiness. Difficult, because they say you have to get up to 55 right after operating temp…and it takes me 5 minutes to get to the highway.

I think NY only allows 1 to be in an unready state, so I have to get either evap or catalyst.

depends on the year.
If your having trouble getting drive cycles to set, you may want to check out what criteria are needed to run those monitors. I’ve seen cts sensors on GM’s be off by 20 degrees and cause an evap/ cat monitor not to run. 20 is not enough to normally cause a drivability problem but if the critera is 180 and the sensor wont read past 160 it will never run the drivecycle. Many vehicles also need a 8 hr cool down before they will run certain drivecycles

what kind of car … is this a 96 subaru ??

under a 1/4 tank of gas or a completely full tank should set the evap one.

other way around usually. and that would be only one of the parameters

I had the same thing on a legacy it passed with four monitors I could not get oxygen heater circuit to set.

ok, i jumped the gun yesterday and started the test with IAT at 90 degrees after a 3 hour cool down, which i think is 5 degrees too high. Didn’t realize the parameters were that stringent. So I let the car cool down over night and then when starting up today and idling, got the EVAP to clear. Catalyst is still a no go, but I think I am ok with 1 sensor not ready. Cars older than 2001, they let you slide on 2 not ready.

This is an '06 Scion tC. If anyone has the Toyota specific drive cycle parameters, please let me know!

I think the problem is this…i would never get into a ready state by normal driving standards. Most people wouldn’t. First part of prep is idling from cold to 160 degrees, then getting on a hway. Most new car manufacturers tell you to start driving when cold…not lead foot, but they tell you there is no need for engine warm up anymore. That, and I cannot get to a 55mph hway without 5 minutes of stop and go traffic. So you really can’t get “ready” unless you try.

murphey’s law though. took the car for reinspection 10 minutes ago…stupid place was out of stickers!!

so you are having problems with your 06 or an 01?

honestly, go out and beat the piss out of it. that will get the cat nice and hot and get it to clear.

Got it. Got all sensors into ready state and passed this AM. I think I really just needed to let the car warm up before getting it on the highway.

Found a good inspection place in the process. Visual was a non-issue. Guy even told me sometimes he has customers work on their computers/maps in the bay just prior to inspection. he didn’t seem to care. very good to know.
