odd timing.

so i was reading that sr’s timing is supposed to be around 15 degrees BTDC. so i was just doing some general check ups and decided to check the timing. so i get it all hooked up, and at idle (around 850RPM) the needle was probably between 25-30 degrees BTDC (if the markers kept going). so i lowered it down to 15 BTDC, and took it for a spin and it barely ran and was SUPER sluggish if i put force into it. just sputtered like crazy. so i putted back to my house and put it back to where it was and took it for a spin, and it ran perfect.

i took the spark plug out and checked to make sure TDC was on the mark it’s supposed to be, and it was.

i guess i’m just asking if anybody else has noticed this same thing with their sr and having the timing up much further?

maybe its running a higher boost so the timing was changed to compinsate

if it ant broke…

as far as i know it’s running stock boost (7’ish psi). it weird, but it’s definately not hurting my car with it being that high.

On some cars there is a timing “check connector” that you need to disconnect to set base timing. ECU controls your ignition timing.
Not sure on SR’s how ever.

heh

are you reading the right markings?

definately. 6 markings. -5, 0, 5 , 10, 15, 20.

i took out number one spark plug and checked TDC, and it’s bang on the zero mark.

Did you disconnect the TPS?

thats part of the procedure for a KA, same for SR?

Yes.

Good to know…

Apparently the only reason to unplug the tps is to steady the idle, but my idle was steady anyways so there was no need.

your crank sensor may be out a few teeth. you may have to set the timing mark of your cam gear and c.a.s. gear.
