Connolly suffered a Grade II ligament sprain when he was blasted into the boards by a nasty Darius Kasparaitis hip check.
“The initial thought is, it shouldn’t need surgery,” said Sabres coach Lindy Ruff, who will find out more when Connolly has an MRI today.
Kasparaitis, a longtime Sabres villain who scored the series-ending goal the last time Buffalo was in the playoffs in 2001, took out Connolly with less than a minute left in the second period.
Sabres co-captain Chris Drury pounced on Kasparaitis, who was ejected for elbowing Grant Marshall in Sunday’s game with the New Jersey Devils. Winger Mike Grier, also seeking retribution, leveled Kasparaitis and was called for interference with less than eight minutes to play.
“He’s a heartless, gutless player,” Grier said. "He has no respect for anyone else in the league. He cheap-shots guys and then won’t stand up for himself. He tells me he wants to fight and then skates away and takes a dive when I barely even touch him.
“Probably the dirtiest player in the league. No one likes him. We got a game against these guys again (March 27), we’ll see what happens. It’s disgusting what he did to Timmy. He hurts guys with no shame. It doesn’t faze him one bit. He could have hit him just as easily with his shoulder as he did with his hip.”
The hit left Connolly curled up on the ice. He was able to get toward the dressing room on his own but was favoring the leg.
“He went low on him,” Ruff said. "If you’re going to go low, show a little bit of guts. And if you’re challenged by another guy, don’t hit the deck again. That’s two guys I’ve seen him "accidentally’ hurt in the last two nights. He hurt Marshall. It’s amazing how he can "accidentally’ do it all the time.
“For us to lose a player like that because he wants to go low and cut his knees out, that’s a joke.”

The hit that caused the position shifting - Kasparaitis’ low check on Connolly along the boards Tuesday in a 2-1 Sabres victory - was deemed legal by Regier. But he, like his team, didn’t like it.
“I would be supportive of taking those hits out of the game,” said Regier, who added discussions about the legality of hip checks have been held at GM meetings. “That isn’t even a hip check. You’re catching him with your rear end, and it’s low enough, especially with someone like Kasparaitis, it’s low enough to be in the knee area.”
Kasparaitis, who’s been called a dirty player almost from the time he arrived in the NHL in 1992, was called that and more Wednesday. In addition to the hit, the Sabres didn’t like the way Kasparaitis avoided confrontation when Drury and Mike Grier tried to avenge the blast.
“When challenged, he was flopping around like a half-dead fish,” Ruff said.
Drury, who jumped Kasparaitis immediately after the hit, compared the Rangers defenseman to a 9-year-old when asked to assess the reaction.
“When I see a 240-pound guy diving around like a squirt after taking one of our guys’ knees out? I don’t feel too good. I kind of feel embarrassed for him, actually,” Drury said.

now on a non-bias comment: as much as Kasparitis is a bitch, that was a clean hit. the problem is alot of guys in the league now are faggors and cant take a hip check.
X 1000 - My first reaction was that it was a clean hit, and I still kind of feel that way. When it happened I laughed because Connolly did get nailed, but I was glad to see Drury go after him. Kasparaitis is a little bitch and I hope he does get his. Mark March 27th on your calender because thats when Kasparaitis is going to die.
Kasparitis has been suspended many time for low checks, weather it was legal or not, he intended to hurt him. Hes always been this way, just look at the night b4 they played the sabres, he elbowed one of the devils in the head. Hes nothing but a scumbag cheap player and he will get beat down sometime this season.
It may be in the league’s definition as a clean hit but he seems to take advantage of that more than anyone. Going for a guys knees when he could have made a hit to his body is a bitch move.
And if the leafs do pull off a win tonight they are still going to be 10 points back.
