***Official Nokia Crew Thread***

It is for me. I use it constantly in my web browser selecting text, etc. & highlighting contact info from my contacts and forwarding it via text & email.

And I never use portrait mode so landscape is a must. You don’t watch movies or browse the web on a monitor in portrait mode, so I don’t want my phone experience to be in portrait mode.

Reading up on it, it looks like WP7 does the same “suspend” stuff as iOS does to simulate multitasking, but if I can’t have my conversations program, email program, calendar program, work schedule all open at once so I can move back and forth quickly the device is useless. I guess WP7 closes programs that are “hogging” memory automatically… and without telling you :frowning:

lol just released and no copy/paste or multi-tasking? So Nokia went all-in on an OS that is exactly 4 years behind iOS? Unless Nokia unleashes some R&D hell on WP7, which they haven’t been able to do even on their own shit in years, this should ensure their slide into smartphone oblivion.

I’d really like to see them succeed. I still say they make the best-built smartphones in the most intriguing form-factors of any manufacturer to this day, but fuck. A shiny turd is still a turd.

Ballmer just said at MWC that WP7 will have multitasking and cut / copy & paste sometime this year. That makes me feel a little better about all this, but I need to see if it actually allows the USER to control the multitasking.

Watching it as well. I guess the copy/paste is done just needs to be tested and IIRC should have been out by now. WP7 needs multitasking…not an option. They are already behind the curve and trying to make up ground.

Oh and who the fuck owns Symbian…looked on Wikipedia but it wasn’t real clear

Symbian is Open Source. Nokia was a major contributor, but they never owned the project. It’s probably just a community owned project. It’s likely going to die out now.

Edit: Looks like there is a Symbian Foundation, which is a non-profit organization to govern the project. According to their blog, they’re downsizing to a licensing body with no permanent staff.

So it’s like Linux for phones? Nobody owns the rights to it? I know Nokia was the major contributor to the code.

yeah, exactly

Nokia bought the rest of Symbian years ago, and started the Symbian foundation.

Maemo is Linux (my phone) and is transitioning to MeeGo with the help of Intel.

And now we know that WP7 will have the same multitasking style as Symbian, lol;

Now we’ll have to wait and see if it’s REAL or just “Dehydrated” multitasking.

Hello beautiful! Nokia E series candybar qwerty… WITH A TOUCH SCREEN!

Better resolution to boot. Do want.

lol if they beat the new blackberry touch/type combo to market.

Fuck I did it AGAIN! The “close thread” checkbox is in-line with the “post quick reply” button and if I click just left of the “post quick reply” button, even though I’m not clicking within the checkbox, since it’s still on that line it checks the box and closes the thread :ham:

But back on-topic, I haven’t played with Symbian^3 yet and don’t know if I will. I’m still hoping for a MeeGo phone but expecting a WP7 device to be my next mobile. This E-Series looks pretty good, but no way I’d pick it over an E7.

Should you append WP7 to the title…WP7 is just so…meh.

I do like the built in Office programs of WP7 like in Nokia’s E-Series devices. And the more I read about it, the more it seems I’ll be able to tweak the OS to do what I need.

Xbox live built in is a waste IMO, at least for me.

N9 running MeeGo announced today. I’ll take a black one:

http://europe.nokia.com/PRODUCT_METADATA_0/Products/Phones/N-series/N9-00/images/nokia_n9-00_black_main-overview.jpg

Things I like:

  • Multitasking is exactly like my N900, but with more features
  • Resolution isn’t the highest on the market, but fits my needs ( > 800 pixel width)
  • NFC seems to work really well on this phone
  • Convex glass

Things I dislike:

  • Camera should have been the 12mp from the N8 :frowning:
  • No HDMI output, however there is some sort of video out which might work the same
  • No removable micro SD, but hot swappable micro SIMs?

Oh, and I forgot to mention in my “likes” that this is open source and though Alien Dalvik can run any app in the Android marketplace

Thats sexy… Will it work on sprint?

soooo if you want to run android apps, why not just get an android device?

I could imagine build quality being somewhat a reason.

I love my androids but I feel not one of them has had even close to the same build quality as an iphone. And from what I understand, nokia builds a very solid phone.

GSM only. Looks like it won’t even be coming to the U.S. at this point.

I mentioned that because MeeGo is still very new and doesn’t have the application catalog like iOS or Android, and some people don’t want to buy a phone that doesn’t have access to a lot of apps. However this phone can run Android apps along side MeeGo with help from Myriad. Instant app catalog.

That, and like sobo said, most Android phones are made by companies that make refrigerators and washing machines. Nokia & Apple are the 2 companies IMO that make the best hardware.

Now this is kind of a silly stat, but apparently this phone is the “fastest image-capturing phone” you can buy. I’d still rather have the 12mp from the N8 and have to wait longer to take pics then an 8mp:

Yeah this is a really nice phone. Nice to see that Nokia can still engineer a great device even if their strategic management staff has been high for the last 24 months. They’re making a lot of noise about graphene too.

I’m really looking forward to a windows phone Noka.

Yeah, it looks nice after doing some investigatory work. I think this engadget editorial is getting it right though. http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/22/editorial-dear-nokia-you-cannot-be-serious/

2 show-stoppers

  1. They’ve committed to WP7, so the future is grim
  2. 3rd party app support. Being capable of running android apps is OK. But I question the functionality/integration of it.

They need android apps. WP7 has shit as far as apps, and the apps they share with android and iOS are sometimes watered down versions. I commented on that stat that Onyx posted (on Engadget) and immediately people took offense. I said “Is this really a notable feature? I mean would this even be a factor when deciding on a new phone. Not for me.” and some people were up in arms.
