Official "People who can't drive in winter" Thread

I just hate when people with 4X4 don’t have winter tires and think they don’t need them. Do you know about a special braking manoeuvre that no one knows about?

Guess who rear ended me a couple years ago while I was stopped at a red light in the snow, a 4x4 that didn’t have winters.

One time I was cruising along in the left lane doing my regular 120km/h in a snow storm and Tahoe comes up beside me and moves into the left lane in front of me. NO problem, I’m not trying to race. So he speeds along. About 2-3 minutes later I seem in faintly about 200metres in front of me start swerving, crosses all three lanes with his headlights facing me and the rest of the traffic and ends up backwards in a 10 foot ditch. Chances are he didn’t have winter tires.

I have 20" low profile all seasons on my SUV and saw no reason to drop a grand plus on winter tires. Along with common sense and car control, they are more than adequate.

Now my RWD boosted V8 with 19" run flats, you better believe I went for winter tires.

I have my all seasons on and I put 140 lbs. of sandbags in the back and my truck is unstoppable. I also hear ya on the braking issue. I just know when I’m driving when to brake and how fast I’m supposed to be going.

I just love seeing female drivers on the road that when they start to slip, they just gun it! Seriously who taught you to drive?

Fucking LOL. I see this so much. Also they think they can whip into driveways at there current 20 mph speed.

FML

I have an E30 that has studded hakkas that I can’t drive because the rear subframe is not installed
I have an Audi A3 with snow tires that I can’t drive because I’m waiting on paperwork to register it

I’m driving my stupid E36 vert on crappy almost to the wear bars all seasons and an alignment that is off. At least I have a hardtop and an LSD.

I spent my commute sideways in the fast lane going 50 mph with angry SUVs behind me being “that guy” because I didn’t want to be in the slow going 20 mph behind all the overly cautious people. I did get out of the way as much as possible to let people pass.

Just throw your plates on the Audi and cover the registration and plate areas with snow

you have no idea how tempted I was to do that today. I just keep picturing some idiot hitting me and the nightmare that would follow.

It’s really starting to come down in Amherst right now. Should be a fun ride home for lunch today.

:word:

Idoits will drive like idiots if they have snow tires or not. My all seasons were great last winter, but they have a bit less tread on them this winter.

Doesn’t Ontario mandate that you must buy and use winter tires if you live there?

I’ve become a big proponent of snow tires. We don’t get hit nearly as hard as you guys with snow, so deep snow typically isn’t a problem in the Pittsburgh area. But when you hit the icy areas, snow tires are nice since the compound stays softer in cold temps. All seasons are good in the snow, and good in summer, not great in both. But there is the extra cost, especially with an extra set of wheels (but no waiting at the tire place when everyone panics).

PA actually has a “keep right” law for limited access highways. Now there’s a traffic ticket I can support!

NY has a keep right law too… but no one seems to know about it or care :ham:

Yeah, people are oblivious about it here too. My wife just shakes her head when I follow someone in the left lane to see how long they’ll linger there before moving over. Although sometimes they do turn left, like 5 miles later.

It should not take me a hour and a half to make a fucking 20 minute drive into work this morning. I could see mother fucking PAVEMENT for 70% of my drive in yet I was stuck behind ppl doing 20-35 mph UNDER the speed limit. Good thing I don’t have a huge texas size bumper on my truck because there would be some morons in ditches right now. Either:
A)get snow tires
b)get 4wd if you feel you need it
c)if you cannot maintain a REASONABLE pace with one or both of those things, STAY THE FUCK OFF THE ROADS!

this was me earlier on my dead all seasons:

+1 for flashback to last winter

people suck. I can drive better than 95% of the ppl in my lowered integra that basically sits on the ground. lol fail. you live in buffalo your whole life…youd think by now people would understand how to drive in this.

Seems like when winter comes along its like people are learning to drive again. Some fuckwit managed to total my dads car as he was sitting in traffic by plowing into the rear and pushing him into a truck in front of him at about 40 mph because he seemed to have forgotten that he had brakes. Mind you this was a few days ago when the roads were totally clear. The asshole even decided to flee the scene but didn’t realize that his front plate fell off.

I heard from an older co-worker that back in the day, if you tied up traffic because you spun and didn’t have snow tires, you would be ticketed or fined. The closest thing i can find is NYC’s snow emergency rules (although I think it should allow people with decent traction and common sense)

http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/motorist/snowstorm.shtml#streets

When the Transportation Commissioner declares a state of snow emergency, no person shall operate a vehicle upon a street designated by signs as snow street or upon any part of the right of way, including the berm or shoulder adjacent to the roadways, entrances and exits of the expressway and parkways set forth in Section 4-07 (i) of these regulations unless the drive, traction or power wheels of said vehicles are equipped with skid chains or snow tires, until the Commissioner declares the state of snow emergency terminated.

If you or your machine can’t cope, stay home or buy some snows. Save us competent people from a commuting hell. Seriously, my car at idle in first is too fast for the left lane lately.

even if the suv owner was present and called the police, it would take 24 hrs for cops to show up. my brother lives in flushing, majority of the residential streets hasnt been plowed for like two days. it’s pretty bad there.
