The point of the GPS is not just the little blue pulsing ball. A pretty-dang-close location aware interface opens the door for a lot of cool/useful/fun/interesting/etc apps that can be created that capitalize on it.
For example, one of the free apps out now, called Graffitio, lets you make “walls” that are geographic location based. You can then write on those walls and other people in the area can read it. Imagine if you went to a restaurant where someone had a wall posted that said how the service sucked that night, or how awesome the apple pie was, etc. Kind of silly, but this is the start of it, and we’re only going to see more complex and more useful apps as we go along.
If you seriously can’t see past “a blue dot that moves,” then stick to a rotary.
