Opinion's of German Engineering

So i think Volkswagen is a good company easy to get a lot of power if you got the money. Parts are costly and often if you buy a used car be prepared to pay .Thats just my opinion. New volkswagen’s are the way to go …

I like german cars for the most part… A turbo MK4 R32 is a new addition to my list of dream cars. As are MK4 GLI B5, B6, and B7 S4s and RS4s. I especially like Avants. E46 M3 is obviously SEX German engineering seemes like over engineering sometimes and many of there systems seem overly complicated. When you have 2X the car you have potential for 2X the problems. Add a couple of inexpierienced american mechanics and something like a MK3 Jetta becomes an electrical nightmare. Im not affraid, I would buy one

I locked it because of this little gem:

:rofl

i am a fan of audi’s, i think they are great machines, i just dont like the fact that they tend to be more complicated to work on, IMHO

The cars are fantastic as long as they are in spec.

Once they get older, most people will not keep bringing them to the dealership and keep up on the proper maintenance, which brings them out of spec and cases problems.

Japanese imports are build with much more tolerances and less accessories while focusing on reliability, which makes them a much attractive used car purchase, but new to new Germans are superior cars.

I think we all know how I feel about this topic. <3

p.s. - Vlad/Joe have a good point, the average American consumer does not take the care that German cars require to keep them running as reliably as when they were new. Once they are no longer covered for repairs and they see that German price tag for repairs the cars go to hell.

I’m a big fan of the MK 2’s. I haven’t really lever liked the MK 4’s and MK 5’s.

I’d buy a NEW Honda over a NEW Volkswagen any day of the week.

:nod though the new gti is fun to drive.

I like the vw over honda any day ,as far as reliablity id say my honda was a lot more .

i have experience with VW’s from aircooled up to the Mk4… not a fan of the mk5’s at this time

i like mk2 golfs the best hands down.

extracting power is not really easy. 12v VR6 and 20v 1.8t VW heads just dont flow enough in stock trim to support big numbers. the VR6 was a great design for packaging purposes. the timing chain system is durable and maintenance free for 100-130k miles in many cases. in many things VW and the Germans in general are ahead of their time. but it also comes with a higher premium.

i think Honda B/K series heads should fit on VW blocks without modification, if that happened the world would be a better place.

i duno man, my car is very reliable. things only broke from higher stress from more power not from mechanical defect.

you’re comparing your 2002 Jetta to a 1997 Civic as far as looks/performance or whatever you’re comparing. I’d say Honda reliability is by far outstanding (from experience w/ 1 VW Jetta and multiple Hondas, one of which had over 300k on it)

You see, you Brett, can’t really compare your own experiences with others. Mainly because you keep your car meticulous and always tip top on maintenance and whatever else, others?, not so much.

Back to OT, I’d have to say I am a huge fan of B5-B7 S4’s as well as the B7 A4’s. I love the style and feel of the B5 S4’s as well as the B7 A4’s. I also LOVE Porsche’s, not TOO much of older ones, but newer ones, I love them…everything about them. There aren’t many VW’s I care for, although I like the MK5 GTI & R32, especially with some Benzo wheels on them :giggedy

yea def have to keep up on the maintance

its the same with any other car, my jetta has about 174k on it, and when its cleaned up it looks like a new car. Dont get me wrong it has some rattles here and there but thats to be expected.

bottom line any vw after 92 is junk :lol

in addition some say the vr6 is a musical instrument, very ingenious engine design on VWs part

:lks

in all seriousness, i think pre-mk3 is the fucking win. i am also a long time dub owner/ wrencher/ driver. the older cars have way more of a raw feel to them. as for a newer vw, the r32 is a damn nice ride, and there are other exceptions. the parts for mk3 and older are freakin cheap as hell and plentiful. these cars are also a downright cinch to turn a wrench on.

BMW’s are McAwful. They’re for douchers.
