Organic Food?

Anybody PS eat any organic foods? My wife and I have started getting some organic foods to keep some of the pesticides and hormones out of our diet. Lately we have just been buying some of our vegetables organic along with our milk and meat. A lot of what we have been buying has been from Giant Eagle, but I am thinking it would be cheaper at some smaller local places. Where does everyone else get their organic foods and what are some good foods to buy that are organic?

I eat some organic stuff, but not a lot. Cheese and milk mainly b/c of the hormones and pesticides like you say. There have been some very eye opening studys about consuming large quantities of that stuff! I havent found any good place to buy stuff. All the places I go have a little section, GE, Friedmans, etc

whole foods is probably the best in the area, if you count shady side / east lib as “the area”. Honestly that place on a weekend is so ridiculous, I would rather mainline bovine growth hormone.

rumor has it there is going to be a trader joes or whatever built in the south hills.

edit: check out mcguiness sisters too. Not sure how “organic” everything is in there, but my wife claims it is a lot more local produce and has a farmers market vibe.

Yeah, I live off of Rt 88, so I was going to try and go to McGinnis (sp?) because I heard that all of their meat/produce is local so even if it is not certified organic, I am sure it would have less hormones than like Purdue chicken or one of the other large distributors. I was also considering buying our produce at Trax farms which is like 2 minutes from my house because it is all locally grown so is it safe to assume that the produce there is has less pesticides and stuff?

Whole Foods FTW

That is… if you eat organic food. Unlike myself.

Eh, I would go to wholefoods, but I am in the south hills and going into the city just to shop wouldn’t be worth it to me. But if I am in the area and have some time to stop at Wholefoods, I definitely would, I have heard a lot of good things about it.

my wife asked me if she could buy organic food and i said sure , she came home with 3 bags of food and spend 250 bucks …everyone is gnna die soon or later , organic food or not…i dont see any reason to spend more on somthing that cant be proven that it doesnt have hormones in it and stuff…

plus i tryed organic chicken …blah ,…shit was horrible

Trader Joes already has a store in Shadyside, not far from Whole Foods. The prices are so much better at Trader Joes.

You don’t have to buy “organic” food to avoid processed foods and preservatives. I feel a lot better when I stay off of that garbage.

It’s for hippies and homo’s

Yeah, we aren’t shopping straight organic, so our grocery bill hasn’t really changed. I still like to have my Cheerios and stuff like that, I just don’t feel like eating meat that is shot up with steroids and hormones. I really am just looking to get fruits, veggies, beef, and chicken. I’m not into all of the crap like organic potato chips, and cookies and stuff like that. I have just heard a lot about how all of those hormones can really mess people up, especially children and babies who are still in the womb.

Most of Perdue’s chickens are grown by independent chicken farmers on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I have no idea what the deal is on the chicken feed, but I would not assume that chicken farmers in PA have less access to hormones than chicken farmers in MD.

Unless things have changed a lot there, a lot of the stuff at Trax is not locally grown.

we mainly just buy the organic milk and eggs… most of our produce we pick up from goodapples.org neat place, it’s always fresh, and seems to last longer since, and they deliver to my wife’s work downtown.

for the true hippie organic experience don’t forget the Co-op over near Regent Square

Oh, that would be news to me. I guess I just assumed that they grew most of it. I’ll have to look into it guess.

At least 1 person has common sense in this thread.

whole foods is seriously the worst grocery shopping experience you will ever have unless you go during an off time. It is horribly crowded, everything costs a ton, and the isles are small.

I tend to agree with whoever said “we are all going to die sometime” and just try to buy as local as we can instead of worrying so much about “organic”. That’s a bummer about Trax though, I thought it was like all local farmers.

sure we’re all going to die, but i’d like to make the best of the time i have left! The only reason I roll ultra skim fat free organic milk is b/c i used to roll about a gallon of milk every 2-3 days… lately its only almost 2 gallons a week.

…i blame my man hooters on it

Agreed, I will certainly die, but I’d prefer it not be from bowel or prostate cancer. A lot of the chemicals and preservatives currently in our food supply have only been in foods for a few decades and there are no long-term studies of their effects. Natural ingredients have been used for centuries, and seem to be pretty safe.

There are a lot of young kids developing diabetes in this country. It has to be more than just video games, because they have those in Japan and those kids aren’t developing diabetes at the rate the Americans are.

I can’t control air pollution, or nuclear fallout and I can’t avoid a lot of other hazards, but I can control what I eat, so I try to keep it healthy.

I don’t consider myself a hippy or a homo, but I have been in the Co-op. It’s on the other side of Penn ave. IIRC the stuff was more expensive than Trader Joes.

My goal isn’t to eat trendy or “super healthy” foods, just to eliminate some of chemicals and preservatives that are becoming so prevalent.

Does McDonald’s count?

I feel the same way. I am not going to start spending 100 more dollars a month on my groceries just so that I can be trendy and each Kashi and go 100% organic, but all of these chemicals can’t be good for our bodies. I am just trying to take care of my body. One of the reasons that so many people get ill is because of the things we put into our bodies. People are developing diabeties and cancer at alarming rates and if I can change my diet to possibly prevent these things then I will. Call me a hippie or a homo if you want, but when you are 40 and have prostate cancer and I don’t, you can call me all the names you want.
