There are loopholes to get newer than 15year old cars registered/plated. I’ve seen several RHD Type R’s and, although I cannot be 100% sure they aren’t conversions, they looked pretty damn real to me.
Regardless, there are undoubtedly ways to import newer-than-15 year old vehicles and register them for road use.
Case in point: the white R33 Skyline GTS25t that has been rolling around the GTA. Taint no conversion – it’s the real deal and it has a real plate with Nissan Skyline on the registration card.
There are the usual risks associated with “scamming” the system although, that being said, there ARE ways to legally have newer-than-15 year old vehicles imported and registered, e.g., foreign students studying in Canada who bring in their personal vehicle for the duration of their stay. This does not work if you are a Canadian citizen/permanent resident, but that it does provide the opportunity for loopholes to be taken advantage of.
Sadly, this will be to the detriment of legitimate importers because once the government takes notice of the loopholes, there is a risk that the current importing laws will be tightened up and NO cars will be allowed in - 15 years old or otherwise.
yes there are loopholes but none that i have found that would be workable froma canadian citizens point of view. If you lived in japan and moved here yopu can bring your car over as part of your personal effects, but i belive there is a time limit for that and eventually you would have to send it back. another loophole which is much more costly would be to bring the car over in pieces and reassemble it here. I belive there is a guy in the subaru club with a mid 90’s wrx who did this, not sure how it was registered (kit car or impreza), but i heard there is problems with this as well.
I suggest everyone follows the rules or before we know it well be in the same situation as Australia, and i just got back fro there last week and there not too happy about it
