Hello, I am looking for some input on an ongoing issue I am having with my otherwise flawless 240. This is a problem which disapeared for a good month and has come back to haunt me…
The car will overheat to the point were the needle is right off the scale and beyond the H (for hot), this is at both normal driving speeds as well as idle. The thermastat was replaced and I did my best to get any air out of the hose (by taping a 2 litre pop bottle to the top of the rad and squeezing the air out of the tube). It was fine after that for about a month but the problem has just come back. What are the next things I shoud look for? Has anyone had these heating problems as well? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
With my old KA the temp sensor was just shot. It would max out the temperature needle, but it wasnt actually overheating. I could turn the car off, then right back on again and the temp would be fine.
I tried this and it jumps right back to the hottest temperature. I have been doing some reading about getting air out of the lines and they refer to some sort of a valve that can be opened…do you know anything about this? Also when I take the rad cap off the coolant is down slightly below the neck of the tube…could air be getting in there and causing bubbles to occure? If so is it ok to pour a little bit of water directly into the top of the rad to bring the level back up?
Yeah, fill it with water, then turn it on and leave it idle untill it says it’s really hot. leave the cap off while you do this and see if any more bubbles come up and top it off with more water if you need too.
After all that, maybe try using a rad cap rated for a higher pressure, like one from a nissan 300zx twin turbo.
If the problem is still there I would try flushing the entire system profesionally.
Ohhhh nooo…I was driving home tonight and the problem has come back!! How likely is it that it is a sensor causing this issue? It will slowly rise to the hottest termperature…sometimes after 20 minutes and sometimes not at all and then while I am driving it will fluctuate between beyond the H hot and some place a little above the middle.
If I turn the car off for a while it will cool down, and never go straight to hot unless I run it for a little while at least. There is no physical signs that the car is overheating, ie steam / smoke or excesive readings on a thermometer (it was under 190 shortly after the car was turned off and displaying that it was overheating). There are no other symtoms one would think you would see if your car was really overheating…unless Nissan’s can just take the abuse :?
If you were me what would be the next step? As I said previously, the rad cap and thermastat have so far been replaced.
Run it untill it over heats without the rad cap on.(not driving, just idling) or get it hot and then take off the cap and leave idle. If the coolant is boiling or letting off tons of steam, you might have a problem. If it seems perfectly normal, not bubbling away, not steaming, then I would check into the gauge/sensor. What do you have to check the temperature with? Have you checked the temp of the coolant(not the rad) when it says it’s overheating? How hot is it? That would also give a good idea if it’s accually overheating.
Sounds like a big air lock in the system. Crank your heat all the way and feel it with your hand. Does it fluctuate too? Or stay hot constantly? If fluctuating, you have an air lock and the system needs to be burped.
Arrrggg, ok so now the water pump has been replaced (looked under the car and it seemed as though it was leaking from there)…now it is still doing the same thing. What is the best way to get the air out of the system. The bleed valve was opened and fluid came out…I am trying to squeeze as much air out as I can as well - but I have been doing that for over an hour with no positive results. I want my 240 to work so bad
