P CAR bruhs

Is the 996 Turbo, really that bad of a car?

I know people dislike the headlights and the water-cooled engine, but as far as Pcar ownership, is it a super problem child?

I happen to like the way they look and the pricing is becoming very reasonable for what you seem to get.

I would only buy a turbo, so the IMS isn’t an issue.

I want to Join the NYSpeed Civic club, so fill me in on them.

I asked the same question…

Hunting for an SL65 instead now, as it occurred to me that at heart I am an old fart

Thanks

The issues mentioned have been addressed on the one I am interested in.

i dont have intimate knowledge of p cars but i agree with the 996 turbo being an intriguing proposition based on the price / performance ratio.

i still think you’re better off waiting and getting a 997 turbo though.

not 996 specific but i hate the nav, bluetooth and other driver aids of that generation of european vehicles as a whole.

997 Turbo is bordering on Gallardo $…not sure I would go P-Car at that point.

Well those features are weak on my 09 ML AMG…so I am more interested in the driving characteristic and overall styling since most of the cars in my targeted budget are either maintenance whores or lacking “tech”

Wrong time of year to be looking at 997tt’s, prices are high right now. Wait till winter and you will find better pricing. I think 997tt pricing is probably right between the 996 and the gallardo numbers. A clean 997tt can be found for low 70’s with some looking.

996 turbo is based on the GT1 engine and more reliable than any other 996. The problems are mostly age related and wanting a car from that era or not.

I would decide based on your desired use for the car and how much you like to tinker with cars.

All this said, wouldn’t a 997.1 Carrera 4s perform about the same for a near similar price but with natural aspiration and all of the nicer updates of the 997 platform? Obviously aftermarket tuning potential is lower out of the box but it depends on what you’re aiming to do with it.

Where are 996tt prices now? two years ago you were stuck between buying a $35k car that was worn out or a $50k car that was low mileage and had all the desirable options. I came across a good deal on a 997tt for not much more. But now 997tt prices seem to have gone back up.

The 996 turbo wasn’t known for many big problems other than slave/accumulator and some coolant leaks. By now the cars are 15 yrs old and many probably have old age leaks and squeaks. Try and buy an x50 with sport seats, those were good options and will help resale.

FWIW I tried to do this for two years but nothing good was available in the fall / winter. More cars seemed to become available in early spring and if they had good options would sell quick.

Go 997 turbo. They’re still much cheaper than a stick gallardo, which are just going up in value daily.

It’s a massive price jump… but I do like them.

996TT does not have the issues the NA 996s had…

even those were blown out of proportion pretty extremely…all 996 are great reliable cars with boring interiors…the TT, just faster and less prone to the things that have went wrong on like 1% of the ~175,000 or so produced

i had mine for 5 years.

just review my posts in the other thread

You’re gonna be getting out of the 996 like

This car is exactly what almost made me pull the trigger on one instead of a 993. I really like them a lot. If you had the money I’d still say 997tt, but if you don’t the 996tt is still an awesome car.

Thanks everyone.

Sorry to see the Shelby go. Hope the new owner doesn’t mind flat spotted tires.
