PAINT/RUST

First off, if this is in the wrong section PLEASE correct it for me and i apologize.

My car is ready to be painted, and needs some rust repair (rocker panels) There was a thread about a group buy on paint jobs but I do not know what happened to it.

Why doesnt everyone who needs paint and body work post here and lets try and find a deal!

Hey, just a heads-up rocker panel’s can be difficult to fix, so make sure you take it to a good shop and have them do it properly.

If it’s rusted alot they have to cut and weld in brand new metal.
I think Gonad had his fixed last year for a decent price. You might want to ask him where he did it.

I already have something going, If you look in the chat section you will find it there on the first page.
take a look and then you can get back to me

I hope you have 2G’s to spair bud. I told you before, you can’t paint over rust. Fix it properly or don’t fix it at all. The rockers alone will cost you 1000 if they are rusted out. Proper paint job will be at least 1500.

Body work is not cheap. BUT, you can always use bondo and get a 500 dollar paint job that will peal after 2 months.

$1000 for rockers seems kinda high.

It all depends on how much rust there is. If it’s not too much they can and weld new metal in for around 250 a side.

Gonad payed somewhere around 300 for just a little rust spot. To weld in new metal takes time and skill. Then you have to paint it. All said and done, your going to be up around 1000 dollars.

Unless ofcourse you know someone that owns a shop.

I’m just trying to show ISHAKA… the reality. He expects to get the body work and paint done for 1000. I remember him saying this in a past post. He is in a false sense of reality. I’m trying to show him this.

Andrew.

ya you are never looking at any cheep amout when it does come to body work. But if you want I can give you some info on a really good guy to go to for a quote. He will give you the best price possibul without having crap work done.

Oh, for sure it will cost money. A decent paint job alone will usually run you around 2 g’s.

But for Gonad’s one, I beleive he said that they still had to cut out a portion of the rockers, and that they had to weld new metal in. But I may be wrong.

I’m just going from my experience with body work expenses. Just so were clear, I wasn’t attacking you Yashin. Just trying to bring ISHAKA… to see the light.

That’s cool.

You are right though to get those fixed + a full paint job will be around or over 2 g’s.

And with something like this, you don’t really want them cutting corners. Or else the rust will come right back.

It’s not as hard as you make it out to swap a rocker pannel. I swapped/made new rocker panels and the peice that is under the rear mudgard.

The hardest part i found was welding them up. My mig isn’t the best at spot-welding so i had a hard time of it. It took me about 5 hours per panel to remove, grind around, and weld in. Also since you are closing up an area that you cannot get at with a hammer and dolly, some body putty may be required to compensate for the shriking of the sheetmetal.

Another option is to go to a wreckers and find a decent 240 with rocker panels, it’ll cost $80-100 to have them cut them off. Take them and sandblast them, then prime them with a rust inhibeting primer and weld them on, that is a little easier than making your own.

Most people cannot tell that i replaced the rockers, other than the flange i made on the bottom to weld to the original mounting point, and that one of the welds cracked when i backed my mom’s van into the side of the car.

Please note that if you intend to seal up the area with tar or undersray of anysort, do so after you weld it up, or your freshly finnished car will catch on fire

If you have any more questions feel free to pm me, i can try and walk you through it if you wish to try it yourself.

Rust was cut out and a metal piece was welded in. I didn’t want it any
other way, and I’m sure they wouldn’t have done it any other way.

Well worth it. Best to get it done before it rots and spreads further.

I’m sure if you poked around this forum you’ll find many people with MIG’s willing to help you out with body repair. I know if I were able to offer my garage right now I would.
