I started grinding away the filler and found out the previous owner has mad skills at autobody.
i now plan to chemically strip the car down, I think it would be less of a pain in the ass then using a sander let alone less of a chance of heating up the metal and warping it. Then I’ll probably buy a cheap chooch welder and learn to weld in some sheet metal! This project will not be a quick one that’s for sure!
Can O’ Worms
I used a DA with 40 grit to ruff it up a little before I apply the stuff. I heard it would help, but it still took 3 coats of the stuff to get not even half way there! I used almost 2/3’s of the container of the aircraft stripper. I bought it from advance auto… Maybe this is normal for it to take so many coats? Makes me feel like I would have been done sooner if I tried mechanically!!!
My friend said I should have let it sit for 30min but the directions say 15… I may have not applied it thick enough, only so much would stay on my brush.
its not down to bare metal from what I did so far but what can I do when it finally gets there since this method seems like its done a panel at a time. Is there an aerosol primer I could use that won’t cause problems once I use an epoxy in my spray gun? I read aerosols primers don’t workout and cause problems once you go to actually paint the car(primer/base/clear) ?

I did the trunk 3 times with the aircraft stripper, the quarters only once because I soon learned it seems to work like shit or I’m doing it wrong but following the directions.
Did you get actual aircraft stripper or the 15 min Klean brand paint stripper from lowes/HD?
I got it from advance auto. I don’t know the brand but it says aircraft stripper on it.
I have found when you use the air craft stripper if you put it on and just watch for to paint to start to wrinkle, then watch for it to stop wrinkling then scrape it right away. If you wait to long it doesn’t scrape off easy. Also when you see you are down to the primer take a steel wool pad and soak it in lacquer thinner and scrub away. it will take you down to bare metal fast. The air craft stripper doesn’t cut the primer as well as the thinner does. And yes it takes awhile to do either chemical or mechanical. I found for me it was a lot cheaper to chemically strip them. Body work isn’t any fun to do, that’s why shops get big bucks to do it. There is a lot of labor involved.
My friend said I should have left it on for longer like 30-45min but I agree with you it seemed like it drys up and doesn’t come off easy at all. I don’t know if there are other chemicals out there that would do a better job.
