Percy xx carbon exhaust gasket material - amazing stuff

well Somedudes car keeps destroying exhaust gaskets @ the flex pipe, it ate up the Mr Gasket stuff, it burnted a hole in some aluminium plate … this car is like letting cookie monster loose loose in a bakery

so a while ago i made a thread on HR.com asking what the heck we should use, one of the replys i received was “percys xx carbon gasket material”

as luck would have it, about the same time i got the recomendation, Alex was out of town visiting friends, one of which had said “lets see what summit racing has for you”

summit also suggested the percy xx, and alex purchased some and had it shipped to his house here

when we got it, i made a gasket for the offending spot, and we installed it

i took a scrap of the Percy’s xx, and held it in front of the 150,000 btu torpedo heater, if i remember correctly, steel gets red hot around 3000 degrees F … so how hot would the exhaust be 1" from the end of the heater ?

15 seconds, the shine on the material faded slightly
30 seconds, slightly more fade
45 seconds - fading has stopped
1 minute, a very slight wiff of smoke when the material is pulled from the heat
1 minute 30 seconds - smoke has stopped, no visable change
2 minutes, my knuckles are screaming hot, i press on

5 minutes of holding this stuff a mere inch off the red hot plate at the end of the torpedo heater, right in the flow of hot exhaust… and the heated section is barely different then the unheated section

here is a quote from the Percy site:

These gaskets can withstand long term direct exposure to over 2000° farenhight.

I FIND THIS STATEMENT TO BE AMAZINGLY ACCURATE!

also, after installing the gasket, i decided to run some mig welds across the flanges, ensuring that the 2 bolt flange we’re using wouldnt rock open and cause a leak. the gasket material poking out at either end of the weld failed to burst into flames

it failed to smoke

it failed to discolor

for the record, i repeated the test again w/ the mister gasket material, it once again started to char after a meer 5-10 seconds in the heat, letting off a massive amount of smoke in the process

30 seconds would have reduced the Mr Gasket material to its steel core

Glad it might not leak finally. Sounds like fun stuff.

you can go to McMaster-Carr, pick up “Ceramic Fiber Sheet Gaskets” and cut them yourselft. Good up to 2600°F. FYI.

Yea, that stuff is great… Percy’s just re-labels it, it’s actually made by another company… earls uses it in their header and collector gaskets… ahhhhhh… it’s a Parker-Hannifin product. Wonderful stuff.

I kept thinking I was getting complements, as my name is Percy…

and my email to them is now on the front page of their site:

Definitely a more fun now, the car is getting nuckin futty.

lol yeah the car moves a better now. damn nick you should have linked them to pics of the car. but who would have thought that it would make the front page. thats pretty cool.

not even a mention of a turbo taurus in that article… you call your self a fabricator.

the car is mentioned in the thread on hotrodders.com, they chose not to include it i guess

These gaskets can withstand long term direct exposure to over 2000° farenhight.

Some kind of new swedish measuring unit? Lol

But yeah, that stuff seems to be holding up.

^^^ haha, beat you to it. in my original email i told them to fix the spelling of it
