Picking up a car in California vs insurance/registration questions.

Ok so I’m picking up a car in Sacramento in a couple weeks and need to know a few things. Not getting it shipped because I don’t trust the shipping, the car is in immaculate condition. Also, were flying out there and plan on seeing a few places on the way back. Plan on stopping in Slat Lake City, Chicago, and somewhere in between.

Anyways, I called albany hoping to get a decent answer as to how I would register the car for the drive home. Albany told me I had to call the DMN in California and ask for a in-transit permit. I tried calling but it was over a half hour wait on the phone so I looked it up.

From reading that I gather that the permit is for taking the car out of the country.

Anyways, I know a few of you have bought cars privately out of state, and information on the matter would be appreciated

Thanks,
Bryan

i dont have a clue for your question, however when my dad bought his e36 from a friend in vancouver, they had it shipped here and it cost ~1k. took about a week. with costs of flying out, driving, hotels, etc. it might work out better?

I’d talk to Walker, he helped me out with questions about getting my bike back from NJ.

Get the title and register it here in NY.

Every state is different, just call and talk to a human. 30 minutes isn’t a bad wait. Just whack off while you’re waiting or something.

It shouldn’t be to much more than a grand for the whole trip. I have the cash to pay for the car and I just sold my ZX2, checks in the mail. Even if it is over a grand I will be ok. Besides, I really want to get out that way and see things. Haven’t taken a vacation in years.

I’ll pm him, thanks!

Not so sure that is the best idea with it being a couple weeks away. If it’s the only way than yes but I’m sure there are other ways to be able to drive it back.

LOL, I would have but I had to leave for work in 5 minutes so I decided to start this thread instead.

This.

Why pay other fees when you are going to have to register it in NY anyways? Just register it, fly out with plates, and enjoy the drive.

Would I need the original title or would a copy of it faxed over be acceptable. I’m buying from a private party. He is a well known member on miataturbo.net. Thats where I found the car. I’m new to this so excuse the newbish questions.

yeah, you would need the original title to register it I believe

Just was searching around google and found this.

Haven’t finished reading it yet but it’s basically everything and anything I would need to know. Others could use this link as a reference as well.

I also find it funny that the OP in that thread also got his miata from Sacramento CA let alone that it’s also a miata. I wasn’t searching on a miata forum, just odd coincidence.
