I’ve been going to The Glen 1-2 times per year for the past 24 or so years, but typically camp.
Last September during the Glen Vintage event the Sheriffs advised everyone in the campground to vacate, as a storm with tornado threats was on its way.
We were able to get a room at the Seneca Lodge, which I’d been to many times but never stayed at. As much as I like camping, this was move convenient and fun given the nature of the weekend. They have a long waiting list, even though we stayed there last year we don’t get “preferred” status since we didn’t stay their 3 day minimum. I’m on the waiting list behind 25 people.
Any other suggestions? Seneca lodge’s cabins would be perfect, it’s unfortunate they don’t have vacancy.
I’m willing to drive a bit if need be. I know a lot of those small mom & pop places don’t have websites, I’ll be driving through Watkins Glen for work next week (bought another 1st gen Prius in Baltimore). I appreciate any suggestions, I can stop down when I’m there next week.
There’s a decent sized hotel down by the lake but it’s somewhat pricey. I usually don’t stay since I’m close enough to drive though so I’m not sure. If you don’t want to stay right in town Corning has some options and is 20-30 minutes away.
I always stay at an Econo Lodge at Painted Post. Drive is an easy 15-20 minutes from the racetrack. there is also a Hampton and another nice hotel in Painted Post.
Econo Lodge! I think it was $40/night without using military discount. works for me when all you really need is a bed and a shower. Has a small continental breakfast too.
Im in the same boat as you, we have been going to the vintage race weekends for 10+ years. Usually that and nascar are the two busiest weekends down there. We have previously stayed at the “showboat” the rooms are nothing special but its a 2 minute walk to the water and they have an awesome restraint right on the water, and at night they have huge camp fires where everyone hangs and shoots the shit about cars. The only problem is that we usually made reservations for the following year every time, if you go down and expect to find a room that’s cheap and close your gunna be SOL. We found camping to be the cheapest, closest and most fun. We camped the past two years.the sheriffs never came to tell us to leave lol
You should check with the local Chamber of Commerce - they should have listings of vacancies at motels. You might want to check the Rainbow Cove in Himrod. It’s about 20 minutes north of town on #14. Bad feature is that at night the road is very dark and if the building on #14 (on the street where you turn right) does not have a light on, you might miss the turn. Warning, I haven’t stayed there since about 2002-3 so you might want to check Trip Advisor for current conditions. I wouldn’t go with the Showboat, which is nextdoor, based on my prior stays there - but maybe that has changed also.
