Priming your oil filter during oil changes.

Is this necessary when your doing a oil change. I’ve heard some say it’s bad for your turbo if you don’t prime the filter ( that is to fill with oil before installation ). Is this true?

Never heard of this.

At most, you could fill it to get the fibers coated in oil (if that does anything for a turbo) and then drain it again. I think it would be pretty hard to install a “full” oil filter…actually filling it and then trying to install it will pretty much empty it anyway…on your driveway. :E

Its not going to make much differance even if you do it… If you want to get really serious you should crank your engine over with the spark plug wires pulled just to get oil threw the engine. Personally I would worry about it, a better idea would be to build in a catch system that retains oil in the turbo as a part of return line.

I know there is a TSB on Dodge Diesels saying you MUST prime the oil filter prior to installation. That was last year, and I haven’t heard anything more on it. But I think if your oil filter is mounted verticle where you could actually do it then why not?

On a DIESEL you’re supposed to. . .but never heard of it for car engines . . .it takes about 15 seconds for ur engine to build up pressure after an oil change… .hopefully ur not revving the fuck out of it right after. . .and there should be a little oil left in the lines too get by . . .

If the filter sits vertical I do it.

zactly…no reason not to.

Or you can leave the old dirty filter on and every time you change the oil it wil be primed. :E

Every single instruction set or set of tips I’ve come across has always said to fill your oil filter halfway so the engine will get oil after you start it up following an oil change.

For me and my engines, I follow this advice. In fact, I considered installing a pre-oiler on my Spec V so it would have oil circulated in the engine before start up. I suppose it’s a personal preference.

What if it’s horizontal like in all RB engines.? lol
