This topic came up on 780Tuners, and I wanted to here what you guys thought…
Do you think there is a difference between oil filters? Are some better than others? Have you ever seen any testing done to compare some filters? What kind of things do you think make a difference that one could watch for when selecting a filter? I have heard OEM filters are the best, you think that’s true?
I only use Nissan filters on the S14.
Here is a good read :

I have a friend that swears by OEM filters. My dad once bought a case of OEM filters for one of his Toyota’s and after he got them he realized they were actually made by Fram. So I kind of wonder who actually makes oil filters, if it’s just a couple of companies or what. I’ve also heard that a fair bit of oil passes through the bypass on any filter. Sorry I don’t have anything scientific but thats just what I’ve heard
Yeah I know alot of filters are just made in the same factory and badged with different brand names! Go to wallmart and look at the different filters…alot of them will have some fineprint about being made by “…..*…” anyway!! So that’s why I am sceptical about OEM filters, most major auto manufacturers just buy little parts like that from other companys to save time and money.
After reading that link, it seems my last post was correct and many brands are infact the exact same filters with different labels!
According to that page the best 2 were:
Purolator Pure One
Mobil 1
-Motorcraft(acually a Purolator pure one, but cheaper) is a good alternative
-the Mobil 1 is expensive
It was nice to see that the FRAM filter is the worst one available! I have used many of them in all my cars! I gues I won’t be using them any more.
I personally have never seen a Mobil 1 filter, and I don’t recall seeing a puralator either. Can you pick these up at most parts stores?
I have no idea! I have never looked for them before, i always just bought FRAM(the worst as it turns out) I know I have seen puralator around, maybe even crappy tire or something, but I have never seen Mobil 1. But now that I want them, I shall just have to get out there and look!
I just did a oil change on my winterbeater 2 days ago with a crappy FRAM filter! HAHA! Jokes on me!
using oem on both my Nissans, I believe factory oil filters are contracted out to companies to make, for example Honda oem is made by Honeywell(same ppl who make heating control units for houses i thinks)
Damn and to think I just put a fram on my 180
^Haha, just did the same thing. Oh well, as long as it does it’s job and my engine doesn’t die it’s fine until the next oil change.
B-Wurm
Honeywell also makes garrett turbos.
y are some oil filter 6.99 = fram some are 10.00 like motocraft and why is a k&n oil filter 65.00$ what is the difference
K&N Oil filters are not $65.00.
Whomever is selling them for that much is RETARDED!
I just use some decent Toyo-Roki ones. They are the company nissan outsources their oil filters to so i can’t see the difference. Old Toyota’s used to be made by them too.
If you guys are so worried change the oil every 4000km instead of 5000km.
Is change intervals the only thing evalutated in filter quality? I checked the puralotor website to see where they sell these in Canada, I’ve never heard of any of these places! I’m going to call a parts place called Bowness Auto Parts. I have a purolator fuel filter that I’m procrastinating on, maybe they sell other purolator stuff???
no man im sure the kid at part sourse said 65.00 i was right there i was going to buy one then i said fuck that i want a sandwich so i went and got a sandwich … true story
seriously an oil and fuel filter are soo key … if you are upping the power on a car make sure you constantly change both and even try getting ones with better flow as you dont want to starve your engine of either of these fluids because they didnt have enough thouroughput or got clogged
I have a 300zxTT fuel filter on my car as of now and I am buying some Apexi/Blitz/Nismo oil filters to see how they compare to stock ones
At the Nissan dealership they have sidecut oil filters and as you look inside the oil filters the Nissan OEM ones are put together and made of alot better material that the other brands for sure and arent that much more expensive so I would go with those anyways
Changing the oil often wouldn’t really help all that much with the fact that there is little oil filtration within an engine! It would prevent the dirty oil from staying in the engine and further breaking down, but it would still allow dirty oil to flow throughout the engine. What’s a $12 oil filter to protect a $3000 engine??
a-d-d? wanna go ride bikes? I like cotton candy. Look at my bicep!
