Looks like Im gonna have a fun day with the Golf on Saturday…
-Front brakes (new rotors, new pads)
-Rear brakes (new drums, shoes, wheel bearings, and wheel cylinders)
-Ebrake Cables (both new)
-Valve cover gasket (powdercoating upper intake manifold and valve cover while they are off)
-and the hardest part… new wipers… lol
Hopefully I’ll be able to squeeze her into my dad’s garage otherwise I’ll have to clean out the garage first… yuck!
dont jinks your self… wipers can be a pain in the ass. I needed a bearing puller to get the damn wiper arm off the spindles on my jetta. I know thats not what your doing but I thought he same thing, ohh just take this bolt off and they will slide right off. NOPE.
some of the easiest ideas in your head for car work end up being the biggest pains in the ass. lol
Well for those who care, the project was about a 5/10. It wasnt the easiest brakes I’ve done, but not the hardest either. Of course being sick as sh** didnt help either. They def. dont make the rear brakes for the average DIYselfer… not sure if it was just what I ordered, but the rear wheel bearings had an interference fit into the drum and had to be pressed in with a hydraulic press. I had to order new guide tubes for the ebrake cables cuz the stock ones were shot so they should be here soon. I also noticed that the front driver side strut was loose. With the car lifted, I could actually lift the wheel about an inch and watch the rubber actually separate from the strut tower. With the car on the ground that rubber piece sits about an inch above the tower and I can turn it/move it. Is there a special tool to tighten the nut? It looks like I have to hold the strut with an allen head while tightening the socket, but the socket is so far down in the rubber that I cant get a box head wrench onto it so im a little lost… lol. I also found that my tires were not as they appeared. It looks like the car is in need of an alignment and new tires b/c the insides of the tires were down to the cords. I rotated them for now and will be replacing them asap. The only other thing is that since doing the brakes, the car is pulling hard to the left… I’m going to lift the left side and see if any of the wheels are sticking but could the tire rotation cause a HARD pull to the left? I have to hold the wheel at approx. 5-10 degrees to the right just to keep it going straight.
Thanks for reading.
the strut nuts just get zapped with an impact. and they’re probably tight but your strut bushings are just worn. not really a big deal i wouldn’t worry about it.
