The area of the eastbound QEW at Hurontario in Mississauga was closed Tuesday afternoon, remaining that way into the evening after an accident following an earlier police chase.
It started out in Niagara Region when OPP officers were called in to pursue a 23-year-old man they say was riding in a stolen pickup truck along the highway.
After an attempt to stop the pickup failed around Burlington Street, near the Skyway, police say speeds got up to around 140 km/h, and they decided to call off the chase in the interest public safety. They continued to track of the car using the MTO highway cameras though.
Later, at Hurontario, an officer drove onto the highway to get ahead of the suspect. When the man saw that, trying to get away, investigators say he slammed into a transport truck, skidded into the cruiser, and crashed into the guardrail.
Both the officer in the cruiser and the suspect were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Its not about how fast their vics go. Police take in the immediate enviroment and situation and make a decision on whether or not it would endanger the lives of the other motorists to continue pursuit. If the silverado booked it at night with little to no traffic on the road, i’m sure the cops would chase him to 160+ easily.
edit: i used to go to school outside of the GTA. Every week i’d travel an hour or so down the 401 west and people would cruise 160 in left lane casually. This was 2-3 years ago before the whole street racing fiasco. Now when i make the trip 130-140 is the average speed of the left lane.
