Question for all you IT guys....

Ok, so i just hooked up my little bro’s computer and mine with a D-Link 802.1b wireless network setup. He can connect to the internet through the network, but i cant figure out how to share files/printers between the computers. Ive tried running the networking wizard, and it tells me that “this computer cant connect to a network” errr some shit like that.

WTF?

what OS you running? is it a router or hub… dhcp? are you running firewall??? did you issue a WEP?

i have XP Pro, he has XP home.

Its a D-Link router.

As for the rest of all that shit, fuck if i know. Im using Norton Internet Security, which i believe incorperates some sort of firewall, but im not sure. I do remember seeing DHCP and WEP when going through the setup, but i dont any of that shit handy, as im at work…

All you have to do is right click on My Computer and look for a tab that says Computer Name or Workgroup (can’t remember which off the top of my head) Click a Workgroup or Change Workgroup button, Give each computer a unique name (just don’t name them the same thing) and then name the workgroup the SAME exact thing on both computer (case counts) after that go into the control panel and go to your Network Options. Check out your LAN connection properties and make sure that the File and Print Sharing option is checked and Client for Microsoft Networks is checked as well. After that all you will have to do to share anything is right click on a folder and go to Sharing on the drop down menu. From there you can set up passwords and shit and be able to see the other machine in the Network Neighborhood. There may be a better way to do it, but that seems to be the easiest.

If you run into any shit just go to http://www.wown.com/ it seems to be the best site out there for anything you’d want to do with a home network.

same workgroup… same b-class ip range, 192.168.1.x and 192.18.1.x+1 … this is why i ask if it’s DCHP… also, if you created a WEP the second machine will need to know it to authenticate to the wireless connection… file print sharing… blah blah…

actually i know the address of the router is 192.168.0.1, and theres a WEP LED on the front of the router…

:itr41:

setup b class ip’s … 192.168.0.x … set subnet mask to a b class… then set the gateway as 192.168.0.1

setup the wireless card, point it to the name that you gave the wireless router, linksys-g or whatever it is by default…

then designate a WEP if you want… or don’t and run open access…

connect a crossover directly to the router and open a browsers, http://192.168.0.1 to see the config of the router.

thats about it.

oh… a b class subnet is 255.255.255.0

my bad

english?
