quick winter tire questions

hey guys, currently I have 17x7 or 17x8, not sure which(i just looked up the model of the rims my car came with and those were the two sizes offered back then).

they currently have all seasons(worn out) 235x45x17 on the fronts and 255x40x17 on ther rears…can I put 225x45x17 winter tires on them? sory id ont’ know much about tires, but the 225s would be more narrow than the 235s and 255s…so just wondering…if the 225s should be ok…

oh bytheway, i guess it is also possible that the rims could be 17x7 up front and 17x8 in the rears…i found the info on a japanese site and couldn’t read it properly on my computer…so just went by the numbers I saw…

so if that is the case, will the 225s fit both types?

and last question lol…

are the 225x45x17 gonna be ok for winter? or should I get 215x45x17? cuz from what I’ve read, the narrower the tire, the better for winter as it cuts through snow? that’s what I read anyway…

if the rims are 7-8" wide.

215 or 205/ 55-60 is fine

ah ok thanks alot~~

55/60? their 17’s.
215/45/17 is good.

so would 225/45/17 be ok? the reason i’m asking is b/c the price difference from the 225s and 215s would be about $40/tire…so if the 225s will be just as good for winter, then I’d rather save the $120, put that towards gas and mounting/balancing the tires lol…

it is a ratio.

i hope you understand that

195/55 = 55% of 195 is your sidewall height.

what do i know.

enjoy

i don’t know how relevant this is, but i’ve been told that narrower winter tires are preferred? because the weight from the car provides more pressure per sq/inch, giving it more traction.

100% correct…

Thanks tips.

a 205/60/17 is fuking huge, thats approaching SUV territory. 55 and 60 series tires are suitable for 15’s on a 240, not 17’s.

OP, if the 225’s are that much cheaper then go ahead, it wont make a huge difference.

205/60R17 = 26.7" O.D

your fucked up equations equal;

225/55R17 = the EXACT SAME DIAMETER AS ME, only wider? are you fucking retarted? 26.7" O.D

225/50R17 = 25.9" O.D wow, half a fucking inch and you still have wide fucking tires.

stfu if you do not understand wtf your talking about.

learn math…it helps.

O.P - take who’s ever advice you like. Not trying to be cocky or ignorant towards you in any way. Yet, I am right. Some people just like to think they are the almighty of everything.

I run 33x12.5R15 on my S10 in the summer. 255/60R15 in the winter. height does suffer. width becomes an inch narrower. Then again, on my lifted truck I need width for stability.

Slideways…want to debate more?

Hahaha. someone has a sandy vag…

And yes, yes i do want to debate more.

We arnt dealing with jacked up redneck trucks here. An inch or two difference in diameter may not make a difference with your truck, but it does in our cars.
I really dont see your argument? WHY would anyone ever want a 225/55/17 over a 225/45/17 on a 240?? EVER? It will look completly rediculous, perform like shit, possibly rub on shit, throw your speedo off and is just extra, un-needed tire and weight.
Is there any upside to running a 55 series 17" tire that i dont see???

And BTW, I DID NOT suggest getting 225/55/17, i told the op to get the 225’s in the 45 series that he had asked about in his previous post.

Please give me one good reason to run 55 or 60 series tires on a 17" rim. ONE.

HAHAHA are you serious???

Thats YOU dude, 100% you. I didnt have a reason to bring this up before, but now i do. WE ALL know by now that you work in a shop thats run by you and your dad, Good for you! You dont have to make it a point to add that into every G.D. post. And whats with making it a point to always reassure yourself that YOU are right in your post and that everyone else is wrong? Ease up on the cockiness abit, every post of yours has at least of hint of it thrown in there, some with more then the loltrain can handle. believe it or not your not the only one that knows shit on this site, and guess what?? quite a few of us work in shops too!!

I have 205/65/R15, they’re TALL compared to the stock 195/60/R15. lol

The 225 will be fine on both the 7" and 8" rim.

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Will 215/65/r15 fit? not rub on turns? And 225/65/r15? The more it’s in diameter, the better on snow, for sure! And loots of tickets, when you think you go just below 80 in 50 limit:))

Im not to sure where to even start with you. But I’ll try to keep to the point of this thread. Unlike yourself.

Simply put. If you can not fit a taller tire on your winter beater/car. Then it should NOT be a winter car. Who the fuck wants a low profile/small sidewall tire in the winter. Slide into a curb, now you need a rim too. Smart!

You seem like one of those form over function guys. Which, is not safe. But hey, you work in a shop. We ALL KNOW that.

I will admit, I did not pay to much attention to the 17" factor. My bad there. Regardless in turn, however.

Now, since my “redneck” truck is not comparable.
S13’s with 205/60R15 O.E has a O.D of 24.7"
I went with 16" rims. Got the rims with 205/55R16. My O.D was over sized, not by much. In turn I wanted a fatter tire, and to bring my sidewall back to O.E specs. So I went with a 245/45R16. 24.7" O.D

How would this not apply to his 17" wheels?

Because you do not approve? It would look like shit?

Come on dude. You have a problem here. With me? Take it to PM.
Do not try being a big shot in front of all of SON.

You bring up the fact that I run a shop with my dad? It is true. Woopy shit.
You say I know everything? Or that I say I know everything? How can this be true? In any way? I have opened my own threads asking questions, because I DO NOT know everything. I came onto this site because I knew nothing about 240’s. I came her to learn. I came here to share my knowledge as a technician with others as well.
Where exactly is the problem with that?

I’m not putting any more time into feeding your ego in this thread. You wanna debate/argue or bitch at me some more. Take it to PM. Which you wont. Because you get no big shot status because no one else see’s it.

Then again, now you will. Just to prove you have a point.

O.P - Go to a tire store. Get advice from TIRE experts. Since you’ll be buying tires there anyways.

alright…lol so I ended up ordering 215/45/17…Michelin X-Ice tires…i’ll be getting them tomorrow lol…gotta put them on my car asap and get the safety done on my r33 lol
thanks for the input guys! hopefully it’ll be fun and not scary in the winter lol

Blah, blah, blah.

This would apply to his 17’s!

Our cars were designed to have a 24.7" diameter tire. When changing tires/rims you want to stay as close to that as possible for the many reasons i mentioned above. Theres no reason to go with a 55 or 60 series 17" tire just for the sake of “incase you hit a curb”. stick to stock (or as close as possible) sizes, that was my point in all of this (minus my rant). K?

K.

I give up.

alright alright lets all calm down a sec!

this all comes down to one simple problem: using 17" winter wheels on a 240 is dumb in the first place.

because:

at the end of the day a 215/45 does have a fairly narrow sidewall. not exactly ideal for winter conditions.

at the other end of the spectrum i dont think anyone even makes a 205/60/17. that is quite a retarded tire size, especially for a car. if it even exists

imo a size like 215/55/17 or 225/50/17 is a bit more reasonable if you HAVE to go 17s. personally i’d take a taller tire than have to give up on sidewall height. but i also like to bounce off snow banks and stuff.

a 215/45/17 wont kill you but it is for from ideal.

in my opinion the best 240 winter tire sizes are

for max snow performance: 185/65/14

for better dry road performance the stock size is awesome (195/60/15 or 205/60/15)

from experience. not shit talking =)

But, but Mike. It’s all about the looks brah!

But seriously. The more sidewall you have, the safer winter driving is. Also, more comfortable. Let alone much cheaper to buy tires of that sizing.

I remember on my 4-door civic. I put fucking pizza cutters on the damn thing. They were like 155/65 or some shit. Tall as fuck, but so damn narrow. AMAZING in the snow, slush and ice.

You want to cut the snow, not push it. The skinnier and more sidewall, the better.

You have ordered tires by now anyways. So enjoy. < - no sarcasm.
